The alerce is unique to the coastal temperate rainforests of southern Chile and the mountains of western Argentina.
The alerce's range at one time extended from the coastal mountains south of the city of Valdivia east to the wetter valleys on the Argentine side of the Andes and south to the slopes of the Michinmahido Volcano—a range only about 150 miles long and 50 miles wide.
Alerce thrives in the cool, rainy environment from 39 degrees to 43 degrees south.

Save Our Earth - We can make a difference!
The mighty alerce tree can live for 4,000 years, but legal loopholes, lack of political will and weak enforcement has ended effective protection in Chile for the species that has been declared a national monument, campaigners say.
But conservationists say that alerces exist to varying degrees on only about 640,000 acres of mostly remote, mountainous areas in southern Chile and some adjacent parts of western Argentina, about 83 percent of which is unprotected on privately held land.
Though dead alerces can be cut under approved management plans, environmental groups charge that loggers falsely claim the trees are dead, burn them to make it seem they've died naturally or just cut the trees without Conaf's knowledge.

The alerce, also known as Patagonian cypress or lahuén (the name given by the Araucanian Indians), is endangered and is thought to be a southern relative of the giant sequoia of North America.
As a result of this and other characteristics, such as their straight grain, alerce trees suffer from overcutting, which spirals into even more devastation because of their low reproductive rate.

E-LAW Partners in the News: Environmentalists Cry Foul Play in Alerce Investigation
The alerce, a relative of the California redwood and sequoia trees, is a rare species of tree that only grows in the Patagonian regions of Chile and Argentina.
Though the species has been protected since 1976, when it was declared a national monument, alerce trees continue to be exploited, in some cases through illegal cutting, and in other cases via a loophole in the 1976 decree that allows for the collection and commercialization of wood from dead alerce trees.
The government has so far done little to curb the illegal felling and trade of the trees, leading Fredes and others to suspect that behind the multi-million dollar illegal trafficking business is a vast and corrupt network involving both Carabineros police and government officials.

The alerce was designated a national monument in 1976, and heavy fines are levied against anyone caught harming or cutting one down.
Though this sector sees fewer visitors, it is more difficult to get to if you do not have your own vehicle because buses go only as far as the pueblo Correntoso, a 2-hour walk from the park entrance (although it is possible to arrange a tour).
