Interpreting the Risorgimento: Blasetti's 1860 and the legacy of motherly love.(Alessandro Blasetti)
Alessandro Blasetti's 1860 has recently been the focus of literary and film criticism, which analyzed various aspects of the film, including the didactic and ideological nature of the director's interpretation of the Risorgimento.
Critics have traced, for example, the origin of his cinematic narrative to Soviet realist films and to Macchiaioli painters (Dalle Vacche 105; Landy 184; Hill "The Art of History").

(1900- 1987) Blasetti was perhaps the only director of the fascist era that went on to be highly respected in the post-war years, and even into the 60s.
He tended to use non-professional actors and his films were respected by Mussolini and the fascist party for their conformist style, although it has been suggested that Blasetti's own political beliefs were ambiguous.
He studied under Alessandro Blasetti at the "Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia", and even directed 2 films in his 20s.

 Fabiola / Fabiola / Alessandro Blasetti / 1949 / film review
Whilst it adopts a moralistic tone from the start, the film manages to kindle some tragically poignant moments, to add to the tense moments of drama which lead up to the final crowd-pulling spectacle scenes of blood and carnage.
This Franco-Italian film was directed by the Italian Alessandro Blasetti, with an enormous cast list headed by some of the luminaries of French cinema at the time.
Michèle Morgan plays Fabiola in one of her most spiritual and captivating roles and it is inconceivable that anyone could have played the past better.

Alessandro Blasetti directed this historical drama focusing on the Battle of Calatafimi.
Blasetti uses an amateur cast speaking in regional dialects, which gives his film an authenticity in sharp contrast to most of the pompous epics being churned out at the time.
The story concentrates on the rebels themselves, including a rebel's wife and the young shepherd (Giuseppe Gulino) who travels to Genoa to enlist the aid of Garibaldi.
