ALESSANDRO FRANCESCO TOMMASO ANTONIO MANZONI (1785-1873), Italian poet and novelist, was born at Milan on the 7th of March 1785.
Manzoni's intellect was slow in maturing, and at the various colleges where his school days were passed he ranked among the dunces.
Manzoni's marriage in 1808 to Henriette Blondel, daughter of a Genevese banker, proved a most happy one, and he led for many years a retired domestic life, divided between literature and the picturesque husbandry of Lombardy.

Foremost among the last-named group of writers is Alessandro Manzoni, the author of the famous 19th-century masterpiece of Italian romantic fiction I promessi sposi (1825–27; The Betrothed, 1828).
Safeguarded by historical accuracy, Manzoni was able to ridicule and attack foreign oppression of any kind in any period, and to his fellow patriots the parallel with the contemporary domination by Austria was clear.
Francesco De Sanctis (1817–83) was the foremost critic of the period and the founder of modern Italian literary criticism.

 Manzoni, Alessandro Criticism and Essays
Manzoni was born in Milan, the son of wealthy aristocratic parents who separated while he was still a child.
After he left school, Manzoni lived with his father for several years in Milan, where his interest in literature, history, and politics was stimulated by the cultural life of the city.
Two years later, Manzoni returned to Italy, and in 1810 he experienced a strengthening and renewal of his Catholic faith that was to form the basis for his major literary works.

There too he imbibed the negative creed of Voltairianism, and only after his marriage, and under the influence of his wife, did he exchange it for that fervent Catholicism which colored his later life.
It was severely criticized in the Quarterly Review, in an article to which Goethe replied in its defence, "one genius," as Count de Gubernatis remarks, "having divined the other." The death of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1821 inspired Manzoni's powerful stanzas Il Cinque Maggio, the most popular lyric in the Italian language.
With these works Manzoni's literary career was practically closed.

Antonio Francesco Grazzini (1503-1584) is celebrated particularly for his style and his vignettes of Tuscan life.
Yet the tone of I promessi sposi (The Betrothed), the greatest work of Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), is clearly patriotic; and the same element reappears in his plays, which show Shakespearean inspiration, and in his lyrics, though it is frequently blended with a deep and all-embracing Christianity.
Croce's literary criticism, in part reflecting the influence of Francesco De Sanctis (1817-1883), author of a History of Italian Literature that became a classic, and partly influenced by his own austere philosophical standards, served as a disciplinatory and refining element through the successive schools and fashions that appeared in the early decades of the century.

 Alessandro Manzoni - Wikipedia

Tommaso Grossi (January 20, 1791 - December 10, 1853), Lombard poet and novelist, was born at Bellano, on the Lake of Como.
He took his degree in law at Pavia in 1810, and proceeded thence to Milan to exercise his profession; but the Austrian government, suspecting his loyalty, interfered with his prospects, and in consequence Grossi was a simple notary all his life.
These compositions secured him the friendship of Porta and Manzoni, and the three poets came to form a sort of romantic literary triumvirate.
