Both Moreschi and his accompanying pianist sound thin, while the choir which features on some of the tracks is downright ethereal: presumably it was impossible to get all of them within a decent range of the recording-horns.
Moreschi without interpreting him as a last remnant of a (thankfully) dying tradition: we cannot separate him, in other words, from his ubiquitous epithet, 'The Last Castrato'.

The last-ever performing castrato, and the only one recorded, was Alessandro Moreschi, who was supposedly applauded by crowds with the call "Eviva il coltello" ("Long live the knife!").

In 1902, employees of the Grammophone company travelled to Rome and recorded the voice of Alessandro Moreschi singing in the Sistine Chapel, where he was the "resident" Castrato.
Moreschi was the only Castrato ever to have his voice recorded.

To the right, a photo showing a "younger" Moreshi, the subject of the Opal CD: "The Last Castrato" (q.v.) This was taken in 1898, among some of his fellow choristers at the Sistine Chapel.
Most people have seen a picture of Moreschi, in the booklet of the Pavilion recordings; but here is the last really "great" castrato: perpetual director (ultimately) of the Sistine Chapel choir; a fine Handelian singer; and the founder of a Roman Musical Society.
