In the census area the population is spread out with 17.20% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 47.60% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 2.30% who are 65 years of age or older.

In the 2000 census, there was a population of 8,162 on the islands, of which 4,283 were living in the main settlement of Unalaska.
Most of the civilian population of the Aleutians were interned by the United States in camps in the Alaska Panhandle.
