The alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) is a species of small shad.
It is caught (during its migration) using large hand-held "dip" nets to scoop the fish out of shallow, constricted areas on its migratory streams and rivers.
The alewife are best known for their magical powers, able to control other fishes minds and make them swim into nets.

This can be a problem, however, when, oh, Route 16 has five or so names, depending on where you are.
It may be the Mystic Valley Parkway in an around Medford, but head south 2 minutes and it's now the Alewife Brook Parkway, or perhaps head over a few minutes to Everett where it's called the Revere Beach Parkway.
Anyway, I write not to vent anger but to share a funny story I read in the Globe this morning.
