Ya know, with all the Wankel talk lately I've come to the realization that only a German could invent that and only the Japanese would be able to make it work (in mass production).
Alex, I think you've got it backwards though - IIRC the KKM (Kreiskolbenmotor) is the modern rotary and the DKM (Drehkolben Maschine) was the impractical one.
Supposedly the DKM was able to run smoother at sustained high (25k) rpm but was abandoned due to it's impracticality.
