Caffi made his F1 debut later that year at Monza, driving the cumbersome Osella-Alfa Romeo.
After that things were strained but Caffi remained a hot property and moved to the Footwork/Arrows team at the start of 1990 to be part of the much-vaunted Porsche V12 engine programme.
At the start of 1992 he was nominated as one of the drivers for the Andrea Moda team, but withdrew from this deal after only a couple of events when it became clear that the cars were not race ready.

At Monza in 1986 Alex made a sound impression, he was lapped umpteen times in the cumbersome old Osella-Alfa, but he kept out of everyone's way and, by the end of the weekend, people were noting that they should watch the name Alex Caffi.
Alex has always shown flashes of potential since his days at Osella, and last season he was impressive, finishing seventh in Portugal.
To many the fact that Alex has had to pre-qualify this year was an outrage, he had performed well in 1988, but having to give way when de Cesaris arrived in the team with his experience in F1 (and his bags of sponsorship money).

I remember the Italian driver Alex Caffi, and I'm curious as to people's views on his ability, as he's oe of these drivers who did well in a relatively weak team, then flunked in a theoretically ebtter one (a la Capelli, Zanardi and several others).
I would say he came across the same problem many Italian drivers have that they must driver to beat or equal the great Ascari, Alex never realy in the class drivers to win a GP :rotate:
