Alex Kidd in Shinobi World was one of these games, if not the first of said games.
It was the final sequel in the nearly worthless Alex Kidd series for the SMS but though not as splendid as the likes of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, it is generally a good game and certainly managed to save the series from utter ruin.
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is certainly a step way above the second and third titles in the series, but it does disappoint in some ways, the most important of which is the idea it was created around.

Alex Kidd's first adventure had him saving his brother from the evil Janken, traversing mountains, caves, oceans, forests, and all sorts of crazy places - in other words, all of the usual locales that make a good epic video game adventure.
Alex's trademark power was the ability to break rocks with his enormous fists (dubbed the "Shellcore" technique), which is not only necessary for progress but gives you cash.
Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars is a bit of a departure from the original - ditching all of the block smashing and vehicle riding in favor of a more straightforward move-right-and-jump-over-stuff approach.

A less well-known release is 'Alex Kidd in Shinobi World,' the fourth (or fifth, if you live in Japan) SMS Alex game.
The idea of this one is to rescue Alex's girlfriend from the clutches of the evil dark ninja, who has kidnapped her and plans to take over the world, and to foil his plans, using ninja powers given by the good white ninja.
The graphics are the usual Alex Kidd 'colourful and cute.' A controlled sort of colourful and cute, though.

Very recently, images and articles on the internet have begun to surface that again like Alex Kidd in High-Tech World, Alex Kidd was not originally intended to be the star of the game, but in fact an original character called Shinobi Kid.
Rumor has it that Sega also originally intended Alex to appear in several games parodying their own licenses in a bit to re-invent the character, with Golden Axe and Phantasy Star on the top of the name list.

Alex had a motorcycle, a motorboat, and other vehicles to ride, and instead of jumping on his foes, he simply punched them.
Miracle World was followed by the unorthodox adventure High-Tech World (really an altered version of the anime-based game Anmitsu Hime), a port of the earlier arcade game The Lost Stars, and a BMX title that, strangely enough, wasn’t released in America, even though it would have been some competition for Nintendo’s Excitebike.
Alex’s didn’t get a chance as a true mascot until 1990, when the Sega Master System II, a smaller and simpler revision of the original, was released with Miracle World as its built-in game.

Alex uses his famous ‘Shellcore’ technique to shatter rocks along the way and receives monetary reward as a result — these funds can then be spent on items such as a motorcycle and pedal-powered helicopter.
Alex can also make use of a pogo stick, but as was the case in the Master System original these items never really become essential and the game can be beaten easily without them.
