On his discharge Alex was commissioned by Benny Goodman to write “Revue for Clarinet and Orchestra.” This was premiered in New York by Goodman and the City Symphony under Leonard Bernstein.
The first Alex North symphony came in 1947, followed by his highly applauded music for theatre: Death Of A Salesman, The Innocents, A Streetcar Named Desire, etc. His music for the subsequent films of Streetcar and Salesman followed.

North's music for the film was very typical of his swing towards "modernism" in film music that would influence composers of the Silver Age of film scoring (especially Jerry Goldsmith).
When North recorded Cleopatra, the composition was so complex that he had several different tapes of the guitars, strings, percussion, brass, etc, all made separately for final mixing at the end of the process.

Alex North really deserved to work with high calibre directors and while there were some good directors with whom he worked, only Kubrick is really note worthy today and that was only one successful joint venture.
I've always maintained that Alex North's orchestral scores are actually a lot more accesible than many of his contemporaries, they seem to have a more timeless quality that say Miklos Rozsa or Alfred Newman, but without the claustrophobic intensity of someone like Bernard Herrmann.
The romantic music is perhaps where North veers more toward a traditional Hollywood feel to writing; the theme is string laden and somewhat syrupy, but just about avoids being grating, given enough alternate variations and orchestrations to prevent it becoming too wearing.

Little of the music on the disc is easy listening and the first movement of the symphony is almost entirely atonal, with mixtures of percussion, dissonant strings and occasional hits from the brass and woodwinds.
However, at a purely technical level, North's music is yet another example of his position as being one of the most accomplished composers ever to write for cinema.
