Gantz Graf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A special DVD release was made available featuring the "Gantz Graf" video created by Alex Rutterford, as well as the videos for "Basscadet" and "Second Bad Vilbel".
The visuals contain the same amount of richness and detail as the soundtrack does, having a visual counterpart to every little sound or frequency range in the song.
Alex Rutterford (who had previously created an unofficial video for the Tri Repetae track "Eutow" as part of a Channel 4 music programme in 2001) claims the idea for the "Gantz Graf" video came during one of his LSD trips.

Alex points out that the difference between working on 3D animation and live action is that with live action you can film loads of footage.
Even though Alex has only been a video director represented by BlackDog, (Ridley Scott's production company), for a year, he is feeling the chill of the current climate where there's a groundswell of video directors chasing scraps of work.

Alex Rutterford—who is an animator educated in graphic design—claims that “GANTZ GRAF is, to me, a visual representation of the music.” In fact there are still various opinions regarding what might be the representation of music.
However, what we understand from Rutterford’s words is an ‘emotional, instinctive’ representation of music.
It is not quite right to think the emotiveness and instinctiveness as undefined or indefinable; in its basic sense, it refers to a perceptive integrity that seems right, harmonious and synchronised to human physiology, i.e.

The accompanying video is also a stunner - featuring a rotating disc which then morphs itself into a type of motor/electricity generator in perfect time to the rhythm of the track.
Director Alexander Rutterford (part of Jake Scott and Marcus Nispel's Black Dog Films Collective) hand animated 90% of the video to sync perfectly with the audio - resulting in a piece that really showcases Autechre's work in a way that has never really been experienced before.
Alex has created a perfect video equivilent to visualize Autechre's mastery of programming and processing.

 'boards - The longest day
Last December, TBWA\London approached RSA's Alex Rutterford and The Mill, London with a brief that was so abstract and so FX-driven that nobody had the foggiest notion how it might actually look when it was all said and done.
After looking to his design and 3D background for clues, Rutterford struck upon a compromise that maintained the integrity of the concept while giving The Mill more material to work with.
For Rutterford, an accomplished 3D animator and graphic designer whose resume includes numerous images and videos for techno boundary-pushers Autechre as well as credits on Chris Cunningham's most technically demanding pieces, the five-day shoot proved by far to be the easiest portion of the job.

It’s so well done that it’s impossible to tell whether the face masks are digital or prosthetic, but the real art is in how Cunningham edits the video to blend in with James’ unique style of complex computer programming.
Other visual feasts on the DVD include the computer art of Alex Rutterford’s video for the Autechre track, Gantz Graf (Chris Cunnigham also directs the duo’s Second Bad Vilbel on this disc), and Lynn Fox' video for Chris Clark’s Gob Coitus, featuring a man being harrassed in a parking lot by a repulsive giant hornet.

It's good to see videos rough around the edges (even if, as in Jarvis Cocker, of Pulp's, early Aphex effort, this is mostly curio value), as it is Warp's embrace of the DIY digital creators, post-2000, with the tools to create altogether slicker fare.
Tellingly, the most recent releases on the DVD read like a who's who of rising-star video directors (Briet, Lynn Fox, Holdsworth, Rutterford, et al), a testament to Warp's willingness for creators to have a high degree of freedom in creative production.
