Skolnick immediately became a much in-demand guitarist, as he either performed or recorded with the likes of Primus bassist Les Claypool and Primus/Guns N' Roses drummer Brain, bassist Michael Manring, Ozzy Osbourne, Miles Davis, keyboardist Adam Holzman, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and even Les Miserables/Jeckyl and Hyde Broadway actor Rob Evan, among others.

When guitarist Alex Skolnick left Testament in 1992 to pursue other avenues of guitar playing, many thought his career would comprise solely of playing around his local New York neighbourhood with friends to a few devoted fans in tow.
As the title suggests, this really is a set of new standards from a generation that grew up within the rock resurgence of the late seventies and the early eighties, with a couple of old classics from the sixties to spice up the set.
By taking essentially the most basic of riffs, Alex seems to strip the track downs to its raw elements and allows both himself and his two accomplices the room to improvise and broaden the song well beyond expectations, while still retaining the essential backbone of melody.

 The Official Savatage Homepage
Alex Skolnick was only 16 when he hit the scene with Testament in 1986, a prodigy with brilliant technique and a big musical appetite.
While Skolnick's sophisticated playing helped distinguish the band's music from the crude poundings of many of their speed metal counterparts, it also generated internal conflicts, - particularly between Skolnick and guitarist/co-founder Eric Peterson, whose more traditional heavy riffing approach often made Skolnick feel like the class outsider.
The new Alex develops his ideas more deliberately than in the past, often incorporating sustain in place of the rapid-fire runs he would have employed with Testament.

Skolnick's strength in the nascent part of his jazz career is as an arranger.
The exception is “Scorch,” which features Hunter and is an extended funky romp that is the closest Skolnick comes to fusion on the disc.
Probably the best thing that Skolnick could do for himself at this point is to begin playing with some of the bigger straightahead jazz names in order to hone his craft with experienced musicians.

Skolnick's revved-up trio stunningly reconfigures tunes by rock icons into jazz-based, guitar trio fare.
In early 2002, Alex Skolnick Trio emerged as a refreshing and surprising new voice of improvisation: a former speed metal guitar virtuoso who had fallen in love with jazz, gone back to music school in New York, and hooked up with a fiery young rhythm section.
Their debut recording marked the first time such a group had used heavy metal songs as standards, incorporating lush arrangements and sonic textures that run the gamut from soft and delicate to loud and intense.

After experiencing the revelation that was KISS in the late '70s, Alex dove fervently into that heady mix of thrash and power metal that became the Bay Area sound.
Alexander's recorded legacy is highly appreciated, his geometric rhythms being a regular topic of discussion amongst drum magazines, possibly his greatest acclaim being named as one of the "most influential drummers of all-time" by Drum magazine.

 Alex Skolnick Trio | Transformation
That Skolnick comes to jazz from rock as opposed to the other way around means that while he has a firm grasp on harmony and is capable of navigating odd meters and shifts in feel, there is a certain energy and, in particular, attitude that is missing from your typical fusion player.
If Skolnick has any precedent in jazz, it would have to be Larry Coryell, who has blended a true rock and roll attitude with a far broader reach over the course of his career, demonstrated to great effect at this summer's Ottawa International Jazz Festival.
Like Coryell, Skolnick demonstrates that translating the energy of rock to a jazz context can be a more subtle thing, showing that you can imbue more traditional trappings of swing, modal playing and richer harmony with an edge that doesn't spoil their essential purity.
