Alex Toth (June 25, 1928 – May 27, 2006), pronounced with a long "o", was a professional cartoonist.
Toth launched his career at the age of 15, as a generation of illustrators went to war.
In general, Toth lamented what he saw as a lack of awareness on the part of younger artists of their predecessors, as well as a feeling that the innocent fun of comics' past was being lost in the pursuit of pointless nihilism and "mature content".

Alex was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954 and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan.
Alex worked for Hanna-Barbera until 1968 and then again in 1973 when he was assigned to Australia for five months to produce the TV series "Super Friends".

The cinematic qualities of Toth’s artwork is evident in the brief panel series that he uses to denote time passage, or in forcing the reader to examine a visual image in staged moments, e.g., as in the rifle of the stories final moment, where the length of the gun is broken into four panels.

Alex Toth, one of the handful of people who could seriously enter into Greatest Comic Book Artist of All-Time discussions and a a giant of 20th Century cartoon design, has passed away at age 77.
Toth's art was routinely idiosyncratic and exquisite to the point that he could seize your attention on the silliest of projects: superhero pin-ups, scale models of robots, doodles on a postcard, licensed tie-ins for an audience that would probably accept anything that even pretended towards fealty to the look of the object being sold.
Alex Toth was known as something of an irascible guy.

It is a sad coincidence that I learned of Alex Toth’s death late last week, only a couple days after I finished reading my first book of work by him.
Toth’s textured brush work is the highlight of this panel, as is the composition, which is extremely crowded but perfectly fitting with the content.
The reproductions are crisp and Toth himself put in the half tones in lieu of the comics’ being in their original color.

Like most people I was a fan of Mr Toth through his many contribution to the HB animated universe, which I still have a fondness for.

I did see him one more time with a friend who Alex really liked and we all kept the conversation on a light joking level, his wife made us a great lunch and we reminisced good times.
Toth was indeed one of the industry giants and definately one of the best.
Toth was never that hot in the funnybooks with the super goombahs (including Batman).

Probably the best way to honor Toth's memory would be to share his art with each other and with those who are not familiar with the work that he did (and many collectors who do not look at older comics often do not know his work).
One of the interesting things often ignored is that Kubert, Toth and Infantino all shared a studio in the late 40's early 1950's during which period each refined the distinct style that they would later be known for.

Alex Toth is a name many of the younger readers of this blog won't recognize...that is a shame because his lean, illustrative, almost journalistic art style has influenced countless numbers of current "fan favorites".
Toth passed away early Saturday morning, apparently working at his drawing table (an admirable work ethic for a man of 77 or 78!).
Toth along with Eisner really taught me what sequential illustration should be.

If you've had an interest in comic books or animation it is more likely than not that you know the name of Alex Toth.
I mean, I knew that he was just in the hospital and that his health wasn't great, but I guess being the eternal optimist I just assumed he would pull through and be one of the ones who managed to slip by fate unnoticed, squeaking in another handful of years before passing.
I'd like to extend my deepest condolences to the Toth family and to everyone who was touched by the work.

Toth was one of those comic book artists that are often referred to as an 'artists artist'.
Toth had been very ill recently, and he was inundated with cards and letters from those who appreciated his work-- something that according to his son, Eric, he seemed to be unaware of until the last couple of years of his life.

R.I.P. Sadly, cartoonist ALEX TOTH, one of the most distinctive stylists in the history of comic books as well as a highly influential designer in the animation field, passed away today.
Toth's elegance and concision were marvelous to behold; he was an artist whose style, honed from the late 1940s onward, outshone most of the commercial properties he worked on.
Toth is known by his ability to make a single contour line speak volumes, and his mature work is graphically stunning, because it is so simple, sure-handed, and unfussy.

I had heard so much about Toth, how he drew like no other and that he influenced so many artists I liked by then such as Bruce Timm and Mike Allred, that I knew I was reading something special.
By the time what is known to many collectors as "The Silver Age" arrived Toth had his own style that was so powerful it would stay in your head long after you finished a book with contributions from a range of artists.
Toth died at his drawing table, which I find such a romantic and heartbreaking image.
