Alexander the Great was a towering figure, but Alexander the movie doesn't provide the slightest insight into who he was or how he attained so much.
There are efforts at a Freudian link to Alexander's mother, at an idealism that saw the entire world united as one, at an aspiration to the mythic that would place the conqueror alongside the gods themselves.

Alexander. Movie Review @ Hollywood.com - The best online source for movie reviews.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Oliver Stone 's Alexander is the sprawling, epic life story of one of the greatest military commanders of all time, a man who conquered most of the known ancient world at a relatively young age.
Alexander spends a great deal of time there--taking in the culture, claiming its riches and marrying a Bactrian princess, Roxane ( Rosario Dawson)--much to the chagrin of his Macedonian generals, who are stuck in this foreign land with their king.
He exudes plenty of wide-eyed fury and intensity as Alexander the warrior, balanced by the controlled calculation of a hyper-effective military commander, although he isn't nearly as effective as the idealistic, pre-world-conqueror Alexander as he is spiraling down into the haunted, angst-ridden Alexander at the end of his obsessive crusade.

 ALEXANDER Movie Synopsis
Alexander led his virtually invincible Greek and Macedonian armies through 22,000 miles of sieges and conquests in just eight years, and by the time of his death at the age of 32 had forged an empire unlike any the world had ever seen.
Alexander expands his empire into the unknown lands of modern day Central Asia before venturing across the Himalayan foothills, further than any Westerner had ever gone, continuing his conquests all the way to the exotic world of India.
The film chronicles Alexander's path to becoming a living legend, from a youth fueled by dreams of myth, glory, and adventure, to his intense bonds with his closest companions, to his lonely death as a ruler of a vast empire.

 Alexander Movie Review
Oliver Stone’s Alexander the Great story is more about the man himself and his relationships with the men in his life, than it is about Alexander’s conquests and life as a ruler.
Alexander’s sexual relationship with his lifelong companion Hephaistion (Jared Leto) is teased throughout the film, as is Alexander’s attraction to eunuchs.
Stone’s desire to show Alexander as a man who was raised by a deranged mother and an abusive, drunkard of a father does nothing to help us Alexander neophytes understand why men followed him to the ends of the earth.

Reviews: Alexander - Christianity Today Movies
Likewise, there have been very few films about Alexander the Great and his conquests; the genre of the ancient epic is so dominated by biblical stories that, traditionally, even films that concern themselves with pagan history have been obliged to at least refer to the looming arrival of Christianity in their narration.
The story of Alexander is told through the eyes of Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins), a general of his who went on to become Pharaoh in Alexandria, and who is now dictating the story of their conquests some 40 years later to a scribe in that city's famous library.
His Alexander is a much more sensitive character, who spends much of his time either making goo-goo eyes at his male lovers, or trembling and whining about his victimization at the hands of his abusive, negligent father and his domineering, manipulative mother.
