Alexander Hales (also Halensis, Alensis, Halesius, Alesius; called Doctor Irrefragabilis and Theologorum Monarcha) was a scholastic theologian.
Alexander was the first to write a commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, before him theologians had always commented upon the scriptures.
Among the doctrines which were specially developed and, so to speak, fixed by Alexander of Hales, are those of the thesaurus supererogationis perfectorum, and of the character indelibilis of baptism, confirmation, and ordination.

Alexander Ales (Alesius) (April 23, 1500 - March 17, 1565) was a Scottish theologian of the school of Augsburg.
When King Henry VIII of England broke with the church of Rome Alesius was persuaded to go to England, where he was cordially received (August 1535) by the king and his advisers, Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell.
In 1539 Alesius was compelled to flee for a second time to Germany, as a result of the enactment of the statute of the Six Articles.

Born in Edinburgh in 1500, Alesius was trained for the church in the university of St. Andrews.
A Latin oration delivered against the vices of the clergy left no room for doubt regarding his religious sympathies, and he was thrown into prison, whence, with the aid of friends, he escaped to the continent (1532).
Alesius never returned to Scotland, but, both in England and Germany, he played an important part in forwarding the cause of the reformation.

After Cromwell's fall in 1540, Alesius returned to Germany, where he was professor of theology, first at Frankfurt-an-der-Oder and later at Leipzig.
