Arutiunian's stylistic direction developed in the mainstream of romanticism and classicism adapted to the conditions of contemporary composition.
Alexander Arutiunian was born on 2 September 1920 in Yerevan, where he received his education (he later completed his training under Genrikh Litinsky in Moscow in the period 1946-48).
However, Arutiunian avoided 'bill board' optimism that was defined, to a large extent, by the lyrical character of his art.

 Moscow Chamber Orchestra Discography
Alexander Arutiunian is among the most important of twentieth-century Armenian composers.
Despite the principles which he shares with the older generation, in particular the polyphony of Komitas, the orchestral style of Spendiarov, and the harmony of Aram Khachaturian, Arutiunian focuses his attention on the vital aspect of music.
Vitalism interests him as a manifestation of the elemental principle of the art, as a method of recreating the nature of folklore melodies and rhythms, and as a reflection of the art of interplay.

ARUTIUNIAN, VASKS, BRONNER Violin Concertos PHOENIX PHCD 153 [RB]: Classical CD Reviews- September 2004 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Arutiunian is a prolific Armenian-born composer with a Arnold-like reputation for profuse production of concertos.
Within that broad highway the Vasks is the most original and prone to use of avant-garde technique, the Arutiunian the most emotionally ordered and controlled and the Bronner unashamed of a heart worn prominently on the sleeve.
This is a good collection and will suit the listener who would like to explore rather than place all their eggs in one basket.

But Arutiunian’s own inventiveness is not to miss in his seemingly simple melody with a constantly repeating accompaniment.

Classical Net Review - Arutiunian/Pakhmutova/Vainberg - Trumpet Concertos
The optimistic theme that bookends the work is irony-free, and the concerto's central section features a sultry, sinuous melody – first for clarinet and then for muted trumpet – that sounds like an Armenian blues.
Like, the concerto, Arutiunian's clever set of five Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra lasts for a wholly enjoyable quarter-hour.
Her other works apparently are written in a melodic style – both populist and nationalist – that pleased the Soviet regimes, and yet I get the feeling that it is really her own heart that she has been following all these years: there's nothing ungenuine about all this lyricism.

I have seen John Wallace play the Arutiunian Trumpet concerto, accompanied by the Williams Fairey Brass Band in an arrangement by Roger Harvey at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester last year.
Having analysed both the Joseph Haydn and Alexander Arutiunian trumpet concerti I have decided to present this report as a comparison.

The Horn Concerto by the Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian will receive its German premiere there with the Dutch hornist Ab Koster.
Arutiunian is especially well-known in the west for his Trumpet Concerto.
Arutiunian's Horn Concerto is cast in two movements, opening with a lyrical slow movement during the course of which the horn enters into a stimulating dialogue with the soloistic viola section, to which it is related in sound quality.

It is the works by Arutiunian and Vainberg that hold the greatest interest however, also drawing the finest playing from the soloist.
Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Alexander Arutiunian combined a career in conducting with composition, being principal conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra for thirty six years until his retirement in 1990.
One senses that native folk music is never far away and Arutiunian also favours a relaxed, almost bluesy brand of melody reminiscent of a Shostakovich jazz suite or film score.

Classical Net Review - Arutiunian/Vasks/Bronner - Violin Concertos
The oldest of the three, Alexander Arutiunian was born in Armenia in 1920.
(There are several passing resemblances between the two, although Arutiunian's concerto, while more eclectic, is unmistakably less spiced.) The composer wrote this work in response to the 1988 earthquakes in Armenia; a tragic mood, while sometimes present, is not allowed to dominate.
I don't know anything about this composer beyond what Phoenix's notes tell me; it is worth noting that he studied with Khrennikov, and that he is inspired by Jewish history.

lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;The Arutiunian concerto is energetic in the technical sections and soulful in the lyrical, but Blacks gratuitously present and wide vibrato interrupts many of the phrases.
The muted section is consequently devoid of shape and leaves the listener surprised at the entrance of the clarinet.
The Arutiunian concerto is one of the better ones out there, but Blacks overwrought style still leaves much to be desired.

Tchaikovsky was, after all, a lover of Mozart and often far more classical at heart than the public wishes to recognise; Harjanne’s approach well suits the balletic elegance of this early piece.
Arutiunian is fairly well-known for his trumpet concerto of 1950; these two entertaining (and, in the "Air", rather moving) pieces surely deserve the attention of all trumpeters.
It may seem a penny-in-the-slot reaction to say of an Armenian composer that he sounds like Khachaturian, but if you like the latter you should like this.
