		Balanescu and Obermaier chose to work in parallel, using the audio and visual source material at their disposal as the basis for this stunning collaboration, evoking something of the noise, smells and colours of Bucharest and beyond.
		Alexander Balanescu is one of the most visionary and exciting violinists of our time as well as a prolific composer.
		Balanescu was born in Romania and at the age of seven went to the Special School for Music, in Bucharest.

		ALEXANDER BALANESCU is a prominent musician in the performance of 'modern classical' music (including works by Nyman, Bryars, Volans, Lurie, Moran, Byrne, Nono and Cage) but also has two CDs to his credit on the Mute label as vocalist and lead violinist in his own Alexander Balanescu Quartet which he formed in 1987.

		Alexander Balanescu was born in Romania, the son of a University lecturer, who moved his family to Israel in 1969 to escape the regime of Ceaucsecu.
		Alexander lived the globe trotting life of an exile, studying the violin in London and at the Julliard school in New York.
		Alexander Balanescu had also been working on the score for Philip Haas' film Angels And Insects, based on the AS Byatt novella of the same name.

		London-based Alexander Balanescu has created this very special recording as an imaginative reconnection with the national music and soul of his childhood Romania.
		This two part work from BALANESCU'S string quartet (with percussion from Steve Arguelles and some sampled vocal tracks from Tanase herself) is split into eleven separate pieces, and so has the general appearance and feel of an album from contemporary popular music.
		It does turn emotional and heart-stopping in some beautifully lyrical passages, but the music is distinctly "composed" and only when the voice of Tanase comes in does the passion rise to the point of abandonment more familiar to rock and roll audiences.
