Berry made various trading voyages, but in 1812 the City of Edinburgh became waterlogged near the Azores and sank, though Berry succeeded in reaching the island of Graciosa in one of the boats.
Berry managed the convicts chiefly by moral influence, found that many of them had been transported for comparatively trivial offences, and that if well treated they were willing to work well.
Berry contributed a paper "On the Geology of Part of the Coast of New South Wales" to the Geographical Memoirs, published by Barron Field (q.v.) in 1825, and he left in manuscript his Reminiscences which were not published until 1912.

Matthew Berry, for nearly threescore years, has lived on what is known at the "Peach Garden" farm, one mile south of Canonsburg, Penn. He being the eldest of the Berry family now living, has consented to furnish a brief history of the Berry family from his grandfather, John Berry, to the present time.
William Gilmore Berry was born December 2, 1781, in Colerain township, Lancaster Co., Penn., the eldest son of John Berry.

Berry was originally called 'Broughton Creek' but the name was changed by an Act of Parliament in 1890 in honour of the entrepreneurial Scotsman Alexander Berry and his brother David Berry.
By the 1850s Berry was leasing out his Shoalhaven property to tenant farmers and it was this which enabled the true development of the area and of the township of Broughton Creek to begin.
David Berry nurtured the development of Broughton Creek, donating land for an agricultural showground and for four churches on the four corners of town: Presbyterian, Wesleyan, Catholic and Anglican.

Berry arrived by sea on 23 June, 1822, and while Wollstonecraft looked after affairs in Sydney, proceeded to establish the first white (European) settlement on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia.
Berry, who married Wollstonecraft's sister in 1827, set up his headquarters at the foot of Mount Coolangatta, north of the river with tools, provisions and the people who were to make up the first community.
Berry had experienced tenant-farming in his native land of Scotland, and by the 1850's and based on his experience developed the idea of "clearing leases", an arrangement whereby tenants were given five years rent-free to clear and fence their property, after which they became tenants of Berry.

Berry was born in Fife, Scotland in 1781.
It is thought that Berry used the coach to travel around North Sydney to visit his friends such as the geologist, the Rev. W B Clark, rector of St Thomas' Anglican Church, North Sydney, from 1846-70, and the artist, Conrad Martens of 'Rockleigh Grange'.
Alexander Berry died at Crows Nest House in 1873 at the age of 91.
