Liberal credit was extended to Bethune by William Cayley*, then president of the dock company, by the Bank of Upper Canada of which Cayley was a director, and by the Commercial Bank of the Midland District.
Bethune raised rates for the transport of goods and passengers, and even ran unsuccessfully for the assembly in Toronto in 1847 on a platform decrying the lack of protection for the merchants of Canada’s inland seas.
Bethune returned to Canada in 1858 after what he probably hoped would be the last suit concerning his bankruptcy.

It was in July, 1814, that the Bishop of Quebec ordained John Bethune and appointed him to "the cure of souls" in the townships of Elizabethtown and Brockville.
Bethune did not, however, confine his labours to the established settlements along the north shore of the St. Lawrence.
Bethune in Elizabethtown and Augusta and for some time thereafter there was no church building of the Church of England in that district with the exception of the Blue Church in Augusta which does not seem to have been used very extensively.
