That is why, Brener and Mamonov are political artists of the age of political rudiments, and social artists of the age of social degradation.
Brener's and Mamonov's quest for direct communication by means of an authentic idiom as a chief goal turns the mob both into a context and an addressee of their creativity--the mob in the sense of that final form to which the society is reduced now as a result of its entropy.

Brener at that time was well known and respected for his verbally aggressive and Expressionist writings and poetry on women, sex, and the Moscow art world.
Brener also understood that (hetero-) sexual provocation or the kind of actionism that worked well in Moscow wouldn't necessarily excite anybody in the West anymore.
I defend the gesture of Alexander Brener because it pulsates with energy, because it administers mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a work of art that is dead, just as any work of art or culture buried in our memory, our conscience, our books, is dead.

Kuik and Brener’s demonstration violated the established convention on radicalism, where a radical action is not an exacting of original essence, but only a positioning of oneself in the context of the system (which, incidentally, is quite natural for Russian artists who lack a developed art system).

On 16 of November 2005 Alexander Brener and Barbara Schurz, artists from Europe (having no fixed place of residence, traveling from Austria to Spain, from Turkey to Slovenia, returning for a short period in Austria, and at the moment being in Switzerland) had a lecture at the Post-Conceptual Art Practices Class at Akbild in Vienna.
Alexander Brener was not functioning as a truly dangerous entity, not as a real serious figure and authority: he was hyperactive, exaggerated, almost ridiculous and melodramatic.
The truly suffocating and psychotic generating experience in itself is that this protective care (that protects in the end only, and obscenely visibly, the institution in itself) erases all traces of difference, of different positioning, etc. and normalizes art and culture as the most oppressive fields of contemporary societies.

When violence, destruction, and flmailing enters the field of symbolic exchange‹and it is very easy, though it already has famous precedents everywhere in Europe, and Brener himself is a result of such a history of symbolic oppression during the Soviet era‹the climate is soon poisoned.
