Alexander Campbell Fraser (September 3, 1819 - December 2, 1914) was a Scottish philosopher.
Born at Ardchattan, Argyll, he was educated at the universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, where, from 1846 to 1856, he was professor of Logic at New College.
In 1831 Sir William Hamilton was appointed to the chair of Logic and Metaphysics, and Fraser became his pupil.

Owing to the position of philosophy in the academic curriculum, their influence upon the wider intellectual life of the country was almost equally great, though less easy to trace with any exactness.
Caird gave an insight into the history of thought and provided a point of view from which the world and man’s life might be understood; many of his pupils have shown in their writings that they had learned his great language and were able to develop and apply his ideas.
Fraser did not teach a system or found a school; he awakened and stimulated thought, without controlling its direction; he called forth in his hearers a sense of the mysteries of existence, and he encouraged in many the spirit of reflection.

Philosopher and educator Alexander Campbell Fraser was born on 3 September 1819, the eldest son of Reverend Hugh Fraser, the parish minister of Ardchattan in Argyllshire, and Maria Helen, the daughter of a neighbouring laird.
Fraser was seen by his contemporaries as the last link to the Common Sense school of thought, as well as the empirical schools of philosophy that had underpinned it.
Fraser was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1859 to 1891, and he represented the Senate at the University Court from 1877 to 1891.

ALEXANDER CAMPBELL FRASER (1819-), Scottish philosopher, was born at Ardchattan, Argyllshire, on the 3rd of September 1819.
In 1836 Sir William Hamilton was appointed to the chair of Logic and Metaphysics, and Fraser became his pupil.
He himself says, "I owe more to Hamilton than to any other influence." It was about this time also that he began his study of Berkeley and Coleridge, and deserted his early phenomenalism for the conception of a spiritual will as the universal cause.

 Fraser of Lovat
Amelia Fraser of Lovat, assumed the title of Lady Lovat at her father's death and was supported in this by the judgement of the Court of Session 2 Dec 1702 against her cousin Simon Fraser, the heir male.
In 1730 she was deprived of her peerage title of Lady Fraser of Lovat by a decree of reduction in the Court of Session brought at the instance of the heir male.
On the death of Archibald Campbell Fraser on 8 Dec 1815 the representation of the family in the male line passed to: Thomas Alexander Fraser 10th of Strichen, (but for the attainder, 14th Lord Fraser of Lovat), descended, as shown above, from Thomas, 2nd son of Alexander Fraser, 4th Lord Fraser of Lovat.

 Fraser's Highlanders - Attack on Quebec
Fraser's Highlanders were not called again into active service till the summer of 1762, when they were, on the expedition under Colonel William Amherst, sent to retake St John's, Newfoundland, a detailed account of which had been given in the notice of Montgomery's Highlanders.
Following disbandment of the 78th Fraser Highlanders in 1763, many of the officers and soldiers were awarded grants of land and settled in the new country, some of them marrying into French families.
She is married to Captain Alexander Arthur Ramsay of Mar, the only son of Admiral the Hon Sir Alexander Ramsay [1881-1972] and HRH Princess Victoria Patricia [1886-1974], younger daughter of HRH Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn [1850-1942] Governor-General of Canada (1911-16).

Fraser’s Highlanders, or the 78th Regiment was organized by Simon Fraser, son of the notorious lord Lovat who was executed by the English government for the part he acted in the Rising of the Forty-five.
Alexander Fraser and James Murray, killed; Captain Donald MacDonald, Lieutenant Alexander Campbell (Barcaldine) and John MacDonald, wounded; and sixty-seven rank and file killed and wounded.
Fraser’s Highlanders was one of the detachments sent to cover the retreat of the army, which was effected without loss.

Sir Alexander was killed at the Battle of Dupplin in 1332 and his three younger brothers were killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333.
From the Frasers of Fruid descended the Frasers of Daltullich, Dunballoch, Fanellan, Kingillie, Munlochy, Newton, Phopachy and Tain.
His son, Sir William Fraser of Cowie, was killed at the Battle of Durham in 1346, and in 1375 his grandson, Sir Alexander Fraser of Cowie and Durris, acquired the Manor Place (later to become Cairnbulg Castle) and lands of Philorth by marriage with Lady Joanna, younger daughter and co-heiress of the Earl of Ross.

by James Fraser, of Phopachy (1634-1709), author of The Wardlaw Manuscript, (begun in 1666) an oft referenced history of the Frasers of Lovat, that a (Sir) Simon Fraser, who reputedly died in 1287, was the progenitor of the Clan Fraser of Lovat.
He was, (says John Anderson, historian of the Clan) "the first of the name of Fraser to establish an interest for himself and his descendants in the northern parts of Scotland and more especially Inverness-shire, where they have ever since figured with such renown and distinction.

 Scottish Philosophy in the 19th Century
The principal figures are Sir William Hamilton, James Frederick Ferrier and Alexander Bain, and later in the century, the so-called “Scottish Idealists” notably Edward Caird, Andrew Seth Pringle-Pattison, D.G. Ritchie and Sir Henry Jones.
Alexander Bain was Regius Professor of Logic at the University of Aberdeen from 1860 to 1880.
Ferrier, Fraser and Seth all deny that Berkeley's immaterialism amounts to mentalism, but it became common to distinguish between “subjective Idealism” and “Absolute Idealism”, the latter being the doctrine the Scottish Idealists espoused.
