Lieutenant Goode was a rabbi with the Chaplains Corps, serving on the USS Dorchester in the North Atlantic in February 1943.
Rabbi Goode received the Distinguished Service Cross and in1960 Congress created a special Congressional Medal of Valor, never to be repeated again, and gave it to the next of kin of the Four Chaplains.
Rabbi Goode was one of 309 rabbis commissioned in World War II, but he was the only one to lose his life.

ALEXANDER D. Alexander D. Goode was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 10, 1911.
Chaplain Goode went on active duty on August 9, 1942 and was selected for the Chaplains School at Harvard.
Chaplain Goode was killed in action on February 3, 1943 in the icy waters of the North Atlantic when the DORCHESTER was sunk by a German U-boat.

Trying to calm the men were four chaplains: Rabbi Alexander D. Goode; John P. Washington, a Roman Catholic priest; George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; and Clark P. Poling, a minister of the Reformed Church of America.
Rabbi Goode was the son of a rabbi in Washington, D.C. He won many medals for tennis, swimming and track while going through Eastern High School in Washington D.C. While he was studying to be a rabbi, he was an active participant in the National Guard.
Rabbi Goode was one of 309 rabbis to be commissioned in World War II.

Some get Devers and Alexander D. Goode mixed up.
