Sir Alexander Russell Downer (7 April 1910 - 30 March 1981), Australian politician generally known as Alec Downer, was born in Adelaide, the son of John Downer, a former Premier of South Australia and member of the Australian Senate.
After the war Downer joined the Liberal Party of Australia and in 1949 he was elected to the House of Representatives for a rural South Australian seat.
Sir Alec's son, Alexander Downer, is also a Liberal politician, who was Leader of the Opposition 1994-95 and has been Foreign Minister of Australia since 1996.

Downer, the son and grandson of former federal politicians, easily won in 1984 and 1987 but faced his first real challenge in 1990 from the Australian Democrats, who traditionally polled better in the area covered by Mayo than anywhere else in Australia.
As a result, Downer was comfortably returned at the 1993 and 1996 Australian legislative elections.
In 1998, however, Downer, facing six opposition candidates, including high profile Democrats candidate John Schumann, One Nation Party and an independent candidate advocating increased public nudity, was re-elected by the skin of his teeth.

The Australian has learnt that at a meeting in Dili on November 27, Mr Downer was strongly critical of Dr Alkatiri and his officials.
Senior Timorese officials say Canberra is refusing to ratify a treaty enabling joint development of reserves within the Timor Gap resources zone unless East Timor gives up its claim to other substantial deposits lying outside the treaty area.
The officials said the dispute sparked an angry outburst by Foreign Minister Alexander Downer during a meeting in Dili last month with East Timorese Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri and senior Timorese negotiators.
