Alexander was 23 when the Revolution began and he lost no time in joining to fight for his new country.
Alexander resided and later died on his Davidson County land, most of which can be found in the northern part of Nashville.
Alexander and Sally were active in the social life of Davidson County and were contemporaries of Andrew Jackson's and Rachel Donelson's families.

The Alexander Ewing family was accompanied on this same ship by his cousin Nathaniel, son of Robert Ewing's brother William.
Alexander's children, certainly his sons, moved on with a group of Ewing cousins to settle in Prince Edward County, VA. Later, they went into Wythe County to the Cripple Creek area, and John as well as Samuel and William, finally settled in Montgomery County.
Alexander's Will illustrated his ability to provide for his family a future in their new homeland, although it does not specify the extent of his holdings.

Ewing, was for many years the head of the firm of James Ewing and Co. He has now retired and resides at Ardencaple Castle, in Dumbartonshire, of which county he is the Lord-Lieutenant.

Ewing Brothers Funeral Home marks its 150th year in business this year, and the owners marked the occasion with an official transfer of ownership to the fifth generation of Ewings.
Steven Ewing, 43, who has been in the family business for 20 years, is taking over from his father and uncle, twins Seymour and William Ewing, 77, who are celebrating 53 years in the business on South Hanover Street in Carlisle.
Samples of Alexander Ewing's woodwork and the carriage lanterns from his horse-drawn hearse are part of the collection at Cumberland County Historical Society on North Pitt Street in Carlisle, Seymour Ewing says.

 Ewing Origins
According to the tradition of the Ewing clan, the Ewings of America trace their origin to six stalwart brothers of a Highland clan, who, with their chieftain, engaged in insurrection in 1685, in which they were defeated, their chieftain captured and executed and themselves outlawed.
It is told that our Ewing ancestors first went from their seat on the River Forth to the Isle of Bute, in Scotland, and then settled at or near Coleraine, County Londonderry, of Ulster, in Northern Ireland.

I have a Thomas Ewing born 16 Mar 1837 in Johnstone, Scotland married Catherine Kelley 18 Dec 1857 in Scotland.
Her father was Tom Ewing (who I am named after), son of Albert Thomas Ewing, son of a Thomas Ewing who fought in WWI and is buried in California.
The Ewings of my family have said that we are related to the Senator Thomas Ewing of Ohio, and I have been trying to find that link in the chain.

About five miles nearly west of what is now Jonesville, this William Ewing built, at least as early as 1782, his home on the south bank of Trading Creek.

I don't know if this is any relation to your Alexander Ewing, but my great-great grandfather was Alexander Ewing, a well-known composer who lived in England in the mid-1800's.
Family hearsay is that a son migrated to America and was a cobbler in Ohio, and he had twin boys, one of whom was my grandfather, Willard Rea Ewing.
No one knows the name of the other twin, or what happened to him, but my grandfather, WR Ewing,went to Purdue University and became a civil engineer, settling near Chicago.
