  Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin
In 1678, Exquemelin is again at Amsterdam where the publisher Jan ten Hoorn prints for the first time the book that bears his name.
This was a common practice at this time (17th century): Exquemelin wasn’t a professional writer and he didn’t have any influence in a city and a country where he was a sea’s surgeon and a stranger.
It appears to be based on a new manuscript of Exquemelin that differs from the one that was used for the preceding editions.

Alexandre Exquemelin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born about 1645, it is likely that Exquemelin was a native of Harfleur, France, who on his return from buccaneering settled in Holland, possibly because he was a Huguenot.
Shortly afterwards he returned to Europe; but he was later once again in the Caribbean as his name appears on the muster-roll as a surgeon in the attack on Cartagena in 1697.
The bibliographic legacy of Exquemelin's "History of the Bouccaneers of America" is complex.

Alexander Exquemelin was a buccaneer himself, and relates those stories that he actually witnessed or those that he heard.
He narrates in gruesome detail the infernal nature of this creature as he coerces men to follow his trail of blood and conquest, highlighting to the infamous scene where he hacks a prisoner's chest and snatches the still beating heart and gnaws it in front of horrified captives and crewmen.
Exquemelin devoted the second half of the work to Henry Morgan, the most successful buccaneer in history and one of the most ruthless and audacious commanders of all time.

Pirate Authors who wrote historical accounts of their travels and adventures
Born a Frenchman, most probably a native of Harfleur in Normandy, Exquemelin came to the new world as a indentured servant for the French West India Company in 1666.
Alexander Exquemelin accompanied Henry Morgan, a legendary figure of piracy who later became the governor of Jamaica, on most of his expeditions.
What makes this book such a important document, is that Exquemelin himself was a buccaneer and was present at the events he details in the book.

When they reached a port, if the trip had been successful, the pirates squandered their ill-gotten gains on gambling, drink and women often spending thousands of pieces-of-eight in a night (in these days 2 pieces-of-eight bought a cow!).
Alexander Exquemelin noted that the pirates wasted in a few days in the taverns and stews all they had gotten, by giving themselves to all manner of debauchery with strumpets and wine.
However, there was also work which had to be carried out before the pirates could sail again.

“The Buccaneers of America” is a remarkable eyewitness account by Alexander Exquemelin, first published in 1678.
Alexander Exquemelin, thought to be a French surgeon who enlisted with the buccaneers for a time, chronicles the bold feats of these raiders as they disrupted shipping on the high seas and terrorized Caribbean settlements.
Exquemelin provides fascinating details of the French presence in Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic), describes the features of that country and its inhabitants, and comments at length on the origin of the buccaneers, vividly recounting their rules of conduct and way of life.

(Even Henry Morgan's early biographer, Alexander Exquemelin, who sailed under him and witnessed his deeds, is believed to have seamlessly embellished the truth where he felt it would make better—i.e., more sensational—reading.) Yet there do exist undisputed eyewitness accounts and Naval records of Blackbeard's later exploits, as well as his spectacular final battle.
However, even in 1663, when he took part in Sir Christopher Myngs's campaign against the Spanish, Mansfield was described not as "the flest pirate whatever," but as an "elderly man," and he died in 1667, shortly after returning from the campaign.
Henry Morgan (nephew of the late Colonel Edward Morgan, who had also been in Modyford's employ and was said by Exquemelin to have served as Mansfield's vice-admiral) was promptly elected his successor.

Eventually the legality of these documents lessened to the point where they became merely secret charters under which pirate crews sailed.
One of the first descriptions of such a code appeared in 1678 in The Buccaneers of America, an account written by Alexandre Oliver Exquemelin about his years as a pirate surgeon.
Perhaps the Articles of Agreement most cited and most comprehensive are those under which Bartholomew Roberts and his crew sailed.
