Alexander Godunov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexander Borisovich Godunov (Russian: Александр Борисович Годунов, 28 November 1949, Sakhalin, USSR — 18 May 1995, New York City) was a Russian ballet dancer and actor, whose defection caused a diplomatic incident between the USA and the USSR.
After discovering his absence, the KGB responded by putting his wife Lyudmila Vlasova, a soloist with the company, on a plane to Moscow, but the flight was stopped before take-off while the State Department tried to determine whether she was leaving voluntarily.
Godunov joined the American Ballet Theater and danced as a principal until 1982 when he had a falling-out with his long-time friend and director of the company Mikhail Baryshnikov.

 ALEXANDER GODUNOV
What few people remember, though, is that when Godunov defected from The USSR, he not only left behind a wife who had apparently changed her mind about coming with him, but he also created a political situation between the Soviets and the US that was precarious, to say the least.
Godunov spent a year trying to get her back, but in the end, there was just no way to get her out of the soviet block.
Godunov got on with his life, dancing briefly with the American Ballet Theater, travelling with his own troupe, acting in Hollywood and having a long-standing romance with actress, Jacqueline Bisset, which ended in 1988.

Alexander Pushkin on his father's side was descended from one of the oldest families of the Russian gentry.
The young Alexander's first poems appeared when he was but fifteen, and by the time he left school he was regarded as a rival by the acknowledged literary leaders of the day.
He was powerless to change the situation, however, and in 1837 challenged one of his wife's admirers to a duel which resulted in the writer's death.

 Boris Godunov, by Alexander Pushkin
This necessitated the establishment of a Regency to which the already powerful noble, Boris Godunov, was appointed.
So he decided to risk his life and fortune on a bold impersonation of the slain Prince and a claim to the Russian throne, knowing full well that Boris Godunov would not dare produce proofs of the boy's death.
So it came about that in a short space of time, the Pretender, Gregory, at the head of a large and powerful Polish army, invaded Russia intent on establishing his fraudulent claim to the Russian throne.

A terrorist turned common crook, Gruber is intelligent, cultured and utterly ruthless, and as played by the English-born Alan Rickman, he has the same sort of thin-lipped, sneering malevolence that Laurence Olivier gave to Richard III.
Throughout all this, the police and later the FBI make periodic and ineffectual attempts to flush out Gruber and his gang, including the homicidal Karl (Alexander Godunov), but essentially their role is that of well-armed spectators.
One of the cops, a pencil-pushing sergeant named Al (Reginald Veljohnson), maintains radio contact with McClane, and the maudlin, brother-of-the-badge routines they play out together are about the closest the movie ever comes to character development.
