 TCU-in-Scotland: The Search for Genius
Boswell passes the bar exam, and is allowed to go to London to seek a commission in a Guards unit (his current occupational passion); this is his second visit to London; on May 16, 1763, Boswell meets Samuel Johnson — after an initially rough meeting, the two become fast friends (Johnson is 53, Boswell 22).
Sir Joshua Reynolds had had formed around Dr. Johnson; in the following years Boswell achieves some tangible personal success, including five healthy and promising children, being made an examinator of the Faculty of Advocates, and master of the Cannongate Kilwinning Lodge of Masons (and offered the grand mastership of Scotland).
Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. was published; contemporary criticism set the pattern of acclaim for the work, but disdain for the author.

 CHARCOT-MARIE-TOOTH DISEASE
Alexander and Johnson (1989) postulate that the unopposed strength of the Peroneus Longus, responsible for the medial plantarflexion deformity, contributes to a valgus deformity of the forefoot when the rearfoot is unloaded and held in a neutral position.
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is an inherited degenerative disorder of the central and peripheral nervous system that results in muscle atrophy and loss of proprioception in the affected areas (Alexander and Johnson, 1987).

 Famous Argument
Boswell reckons that Johnson is mistaken and notes in his journal of the Scottish tour, ‘Auchinleck does not signify a "stony field", as he has said, but a "field of flag stones"; and this place has a number of rocks, which abound in strata of that kind.'
He wrote, 'He has built a house of hewn stone, very stately and durable and has advanced the value of his lands with great tenderness to his tenants.' Johnson was particularly taken by the ‘sullen dignity’ of the ruins of the old castle at Auchinleck.
Now, as then, Auchinleck’s west-facing library dominates the first floor and contains a collection of books relating to Johnson and Boswell, including complete runs of the latter’s journal and correspondence donated by the Yale Editions of the Boswell Papers.

 Boswell's Life of Johnson, 1752
Sir Joshua, indeed, was lucky enough at their very first meeting to make a remark, which was so much above the commonplace style of conversation, that Johnson at once perceived that Reynolds had the habit of thinking for himself.
Sir Joshua told me a pleasant characteristical anecdote of Johnson about the time of their first acquaintance.
"Now, Sir, (said Beauclerk) you are like Hogarth's Idle Apprentice." When Johnson got his pension, Beauclerk said to him, in the humourous phrase of Falstaff, "I hope you'll now purge and live cleanly, like a gentleman."

It should be noted that Skene, Johnson, Caldwell, Huffman and Berkow all represented mainstream medical thought and were published in such prestigious journals as The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Archives of Surgery and The Journal of Urology.
Later, in 1922, Franklin P. Johnson, M. D., made a case for the urethral glands and the urogenital sinus glands (Skene’s glands) being homologous to the prostate gland in the male.
In 1943, John Huffman, M. D., an obstetrician and gynecologist, conducted research on Skene’s glands and came to the conclusion that the extent of the glands and ducts surrounding the urethra had been greatly underestimated by Skene.

Alexander has been one of the, if not the, best pitchers in the league the last three years averaging an ERA of 2.84, and winning the 2001 Cy Young award.

The New York Review of Books: The IBM Shakespeare
Alexander Cruden, a contemporary of Johnson's, known as Alexander the Corrector from his trade of proofreader, published in 1737 the work from which he expected fame.
In the old days only the Bible rated a concordance, for in it alone every word counted; as late as Johnson's Dictionary the word is defined as meaning "a book which shows in how many texts of Scripture any word occurs." There were numerous biblical concordances, but the one everybody knows about is Cruden's.
There were signs that even before he started the book he was not quite right in the head, but disappointment at its failure to make his fortune drove him madder, so that in later life he became a rather well-liked, serious, and useful nut about town.
