LAS VEGAS, Aug 20: Grandmaster Alexander Khalifman (Russia) entered the final of the World Chess Championship defeating Romanian GM Liviu Dieter Nisipeanu in a closely-contested tie-breaker today.
Khalifman will meet Armenian GM Valadimir Akopian in the six-game finals after a rest of two days for the title of world champion and a prize of $6,60,000.
However, Khalifman gave the piece back for an attack on the fl king with his position slipping slowly but surely, Nisipeanu came up with a queen offer.

Alexander Valeryevich Khalifman was born January 18, 1966, in Leningrad.
Khalifman was born in "Russia", Kasparov in "Azerbaijan", Petrosian in "Georgia", etc. At least it would be desirable that something like "then part of Soviet Union" was added.
That's actually encouraging, since I would not assume that a mid-level GM could necessarily have a full belly, or even enjoy three square meals a day on a regular basis.

However, many may not consider this an upset since he was bested by the defending champ, Alexander Khalifman in a real grudge match (Kasparovchess.com stats guru Jeff Sonas has Khalifman as the #2 favorite to win the event behind Anand, I haven't seen any bookmakers odds).
If you recall in January, Leko dominated the Khalifman, in their match, which was the first appearance since El Khalif took the title in Vegas.
