The Kohut Heine collection came in 1930, the Winkler archive in 1938.
Literary editions from the second half of the nineteenth century are to a large extent present in Sterling Memorial Library, the result of systematic purchase of German books begun at Yale during those decades.
In 1915 Kohut gave to Yale his father's extensive library of Judaica, the Alexander Kohut Memorial Collection, and in 1933 he donated his own Heine collection, which he had recently augmented by purchasing the Heine library of the Munich dramatist Arthur Ernst Rutra.

Kohut opposed Hartmann's formulation with his own conception that when a patient responds with anger to an interpretation, this means that the interpretation is unempathic.
Kohut does not discuss these questions or even acknowledge the issue, but there is no question that he pursued a line of interpretation that caused severe shock to the ego.

The Advent of Modern Rabbinic Lexicography
The Hungarian-born Alexander Kohut, whose career spanned two oceans and at least two generations of scholarship, was a pivotal figure in the modern history of rabbinic lexicography.
Kohut studied at the Breslau Seminary and at the University of Leipzig, where he received a thorough grounding in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Persian and Semitic languages as well as his doctorate.
Kohut completed his scholarly efforts in the United States after moving from his post as rabbi of Nagyvard (German: Grosswardein, in Hungary), to New York City in May of 1885 and died there in 1894.

 Heinz Kohut
"Kohut" is a fairly common Jewish name that is probably derived from the Hebrew name [GREEK TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII] (Kohath), the son of Levi (one of the sons of Jacob) mentioned in Genesis 4-6:11.
Kohut's paternal grandfather, Bernhard (or, in the Jewish records, Bernat) Kohut, born in 1842 to Ignaz Kohut and Ester Hupka Kohut, was an English teacher in a gymnasium, having worked his way up from elementary-school teaching.
That made her, in the eyes of her grandson, a Catholic by belief in a world that came to insist she had to stand up and be counted ethnically as a Jew, which became, of course, the great crisis of identity for all converted Jews throughout Germany after 1933 and Austria after I938.

Alexander's 1956 departure from Chicago to Palo Alto was, in Roy Grinker Sr.'s opinion, 'at least partially due to his staff's discontent and their open revolt against his liberality'.
When Kohut mooted the idea of revising the curriculum and including an informal postgraduate course in self psychology within the institute, Pollock reacted strongly since the suggestion could be construed as an institute within an institute which would have challenged Pollock's control.

But this very fact suggests that the games must have been broadly familiar to the population supporting the Talmudic Academies; they were firmly enough established in day-to-day usage to be included as a matter of course in legal argument.
In his article that I have mentioned, Kohut considers that iskundrée derives from "Iskander ibn-Phillip Maqudon" which is nothing other than the Persian and Arabic version of the name "Alexander son of Philip of Macedonia".
In the Talmud, Alexander the Great is himself called Alexandros; the contrasting word iskundrée may have been specially chosen to denote the game of which Alexander was the mediator.

Kohut (1971) writes that whereas the borderline personality has a less cohesive self, and is thus subject to episodes of fragmentation, the narcissist has more transient episodes of fragmentation and recovers his or her sense of self more readily.
Narcissists are therefore able to "snap back" and repair their narcissistic injuries with more ease than the borderline, according to Kohut (Alexander, 1996, p.

The "Aruch" was used by Rashi in the eleventh century in his great commentary to the Talmud and is often quoted by his descendants, the Tosafists of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

 Cannibals in Canaan
A similar tradition is preserved in rabbinic literature, where it is the Girgashite nation who evade Joshua's onslaught by migrating to Africa.
The same assumption underlies the Talmudic tale about "Africans" who once came before Alexander the Great to accuse the Jews of stealing the Canaanites' homeland.
Although we may have become habituated to "unaligned" nations meddling in other people's affairs, especially where it involves condemnations of the Jews, this African championing of the Canaanite cause makes little sense unless we accept the premise that they regarded themselves as the heirs to the biblical Canaanites.
