Scottish general, was the son of George Leslie, captain of Blair-inAthol, and a member of the family of Leslie of Balquhain.
Levens great reputation, wisdom and tact made him an ideal commander for the allied army formed by the junction of Levens, Fairfaxs and Manchesters in Yorkshire.
Leven at last fell into the hands of a party of English dragoons in August 1651, and with some others was sent to London.

The illegitimate son of Captain George Leslie of Blair Castle in Atholl, Alexander Leslie became a soldier and fought under Sir Horace Vere in the Netherlands (1605-7), then transferred to the Swedish army as an ensign in 1608.
Leven's advance south was resisted by the Marquis of Newcastle.
Leven refused to support the Engager invasion of England in 1648, but was appointed Lord-General of all forces that might be raised for the defence of Scotland.

When Charles surrendered to the Scottish army in 1646, Leven had charge of him until the royal prisoner was handed over to the English in 1647.
Although Leven resigned actual command of the army to his nephew David Leslie before the Scottish Covenanters (by then royalists) were defeated (1650) at Dunbar, he was twice imprisoned briefly in the Tower of London.

Alexander took to the profession of arms very early in life, and served as a Captain in the Regiment of Horatio, Lord Vere, in Holland, and served with the Dutch against the Spaniards.
In 1642, Alexander, Earl of Leven was appointed General of the Scottish forces for suppressing the rebellion in Ireland from whence he was recalled in 1643, to command of the Scottish Army of 21,000 men, assembled at Berwick.
Since the Earl had to be away in London at Court much of the time, his wife Anne Lindsay, daughter of the Earl of Crawford and Lindsay, undertook much of the supervision, and as the surviving correspondence shows, she was intelligent, hardworking and very attentive to detail.
