The Film, Return of the Firebird, Directed by Andris Liepa, Staged by Isabelle Fokine and Andris Liepa
By then, Liepa was a member of the St. Petersburg company, and Nina was a guesting with the troupe.
Fortunately, Liepa was able to garner enough interest and support for his Fokine project, and with the help of Russia's Parex Bank and other institutions, he was able to film his conception of Petrouchka, Firebird and Scheherazade.

'Fanny and Alexander' is the story of two children belonging to a wealthy, extensive theatrical family in provincial Sweden in the early years of the 20th century, 10-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve) and his younger sister, Fanny (Pernilla Alwin).
When their father dies unexpectedly during a performance and their mother decides to remarry, the children are forced to relocate to the austere (and possibly haunted) home of their stern and rather coldhearted stepfather, Bishop Vergerus (Jan Malmsjo).

CONTEXT - This Week in Arts and Ideas from The Moscow Times
Dancers Ilze Liepa and Nikolai Tsiskaridze created the ballet sensation of the season four years ago with their stellar performance of the lead roles in the Bolshoi Theater premiere of Roland Petit's ballet "The Queen of Spades." For that achievement, each of them later received a Golden Mask award.
Rather than attempting to reproduce the original, the producers of the revival, the Maris Liepa Foundation and the Kremlin Ballet, have opted for completely new choreography, entrusting it to Canadian-born Wayne Eagling, a former lead dancer of London's Royal Ballet who is slated to assume directorship of the English National Ballet next month.
Joining Liepa and Tsiskaridze to dance "The Blue God" on Tuesday will be soloists and the corps de ballet of the Kremlin Ballet.

Well, although none of the original cast-members were still performing at this late date, the younger generation proved that it was every bit the successor.
True, Mukhamedov was no Vasiliev; he was about 30 at the time of this performance and was already slower than Vasiliev when he was at that age; note that Vasiliev had to wait till he was about 37 before his legendary film-version was shot--albeit, poorly shot.
Granted Vetrov's interpretation is coarser than Liepa's, but he brings to the role his own inimitable style--certainly a far better Crassus than Gabovich ('79 Vasiliev and '84 Mukhamedov) ever was.
