Alexander Martin Lippisch was born on 2 November 1894 in Munich, Germany, the son of Franz and Clara (Commichau) Lippisch.
Lippisch decided that this would only be possible by making the wing near the body longer, and this is how he arrived at the delta shaped wing.
Alexander M. Lippisch died 11 February 1976 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, of a heart and lung ailment.

Alexander Martin Lippisch (November 2, 1894 - February 11, 1976) was a German pioneer of aerodynamics who made important contributions to the understanding of flying wings and ground effect craft.
Following the war, Lippisch worked for a while with the Zeppelin Company, and it was at this time that he first became interested in tail-less aircraft.
Wind tunnel research in 1939 had suggested that the delta wing was a good choice for supersonic flight and Lippisch set to work designing a supersonic, ramjet-powered fighter, the Lippisch P-13.

Lippisch hatte seine ersten Erfahrungen im Segelflugbereich gesammelt und sich dort auf die Entwicklung schwanzloser Flugzeuge spezialisiert.
Da die schwanzlose Auslegung, wie bei seiner 'Ente' schon 1928 anschaulich bewiesen, ideal fur Raktenflugzeuge erschien, entwarf Lippisch aufbauend auf seinen Erfahrungen einen raketengetriebenen Einsitzer mit Delta-Flugeln fur die Rolle eines Jagdflugzeuges.
Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war Lippisch unter anderem in den USA tatig, wo er 1963 bei der Firma Collins Hydrodynamic Laboratory erste, allerdings erfolglose, Versuche mit einem Bodeneffektfahrzeug unternahm.

Etrich himself recommended the configuration to Lippisch; his faith in the principle was reaffirmed when the 1929 Storch IV glider demonstrated impressive stability and control characteristics with Gunther Gronhoff at the controls.
Lippisch later worked on three more versions of the Storch; the Storch VII, powered by a 24-hp engine, won a prize for the first 300 km overland flight of a tailless aircraft when Gronhoff flew the aircraft from the Wasserkuppe to Berlin in 1931 in 1 hour, 55 minutes.
Lippisch's methodical, step-by-step experiments had been quite successful with the Storch series, but the Storch was merely a foundation for further efforts to build a pure, all-wing aircraft.

In the late summer of 1942, Alexander Lippisch was working on the P.11 twin-jet fast bomber.
Armament was to be two MK 103 30mm cannon mounted in the wings, with a provision for an additional two MK 103 30mm cannon or one BK 7.5 75mm cannon in an external pack.
Lippisch hoped to commence flight tests with the unpowered glider by April 1944, with the two Jumo 004B turbojet powered version to be flying by July 1944.

As a boy of 14, Lippisch witnessed a flight by Orville Wright in September 1909.
Opel approached Alexander M. Lippisch, a young designer working at the Rhon-Rossitten-Gesellschaft, who had already displayed a penchant for the unorthodox in airplane configuration, with the proposal that he, too, design a glider for rocket power.
Lippisch took up the idea in 1920 with very little in the way of experience in tailless airplanes, making it true pioneering work.

The Fafnir was designed by Alexander Lippisch and built by the RRG workshops on the Wasserkuppe, for the 1930 Rhoen competitions.
On a mission to gather weather data, he installed various instruments on his Alexander Lippisch built "Fafnir" model 272 glider and was towed to altitude by a powered aircraft piloted by another famous pilot, Peter Reidel.
