Mackendrick was born in Boston in 1912 to Scottish immigrant parents.
Mackendrick’s films come across as a sort of cross between the clinical class-conscious dramas of Joseph Losey and the sharp, funny satire of Richard Lester.
Mackendrick managed to avoid any sentimentality in the subject, crafting a genuinely moving and compassionate film which centred on the attempts at teaching Mandy to communicate.

When MacKendrick was six, his father fell victim to the influenza pandemic that swept the world just after World War I.
After The Sweet Smell of Success, MacKendrick went back to England to make his second HHL film, The Devil’s Disciple in 1959, but he was fired only a month into production due to lingering tension from their first project together.
Due to severe emphysema, MacKendrick was unable to go home to Europe during much of his time at the college.

This essay offers another example of my overall impression of this book, which succeeds as a film-school textbook but is not the best choice for the everyday movie lover.
