Topic: Alexander McDonell

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

  Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
Alexander McDonell, to whom Thomas D’Arcy McGee* would refer as the “greatest Tory in Canada,” belonged to a Highland clan which had supported Prince Charles, the Young Pretender, in 1745, and had suffered the consequences of his failure.
McDonell would have greatly preferred to have them paid from London and thus be independent of the provincial government, but he had to be content with this limited success.
Maitland saw in McDonell a useful ally and, in recognition of his acceptability, he was named to the land board of the Eastern District, made a member of a committee investigating the purchase of Indian lands, and appointed one of the commissioners to end the long dispute over the boundary of Upper and Lower Canada.
