Under these circumstances the greatest solicitude was devoted to the education of Nicholas as cesarevich, whereas Alexander received only the perfunctory and inadequate training of an ordinary grand-duke of that period, which did not go much beyond primary and secondary instruction, practical acquaintance with French, English and German, and a certain amount of drill.

Clearly, any film from the 1930's will feel somewhat dated, but "Alexander Nevsky" is cursed by the melodramatic posturing of its acting style - it looks more like a throwback to the era of silent movies, or even to the Victorian stage or early 20th century opera.
Alexander Nevsky was a Russian leader who fought off invading Swedes, Poles, and Germans, at a time when his country was most threatened by the Tartars - they exacted an annual tribute to ensure their continued passivity.

There is a good reason that some film music becomes so famous and in the case of Alexander Nevsky it's not terribly difficult to know why; it is very thematic, rousing, thrilling, beautiful and moves through every kind of emotion an epic tale such as Nevsky's should.
The climax of the suite is the rousing, yet hymnal Alexander's Entry into Pskov where the choir and orchestra capture the celebratory mood of Nevsky's victory.
I would admit that sometimes it is not easy listen; much of the central portions of Alexander Nevsky are fairly intense and uncompromising, but this is the kind of music that has truly transcended its origins and brilliantly tells the story without the visuals.

Alexander (1220 1263) defeated the Swedes (1240), Teutonic Knights (1242) and Lithuanians (1245), but recognised the overwhelming power of the Mongols and spared his people their wrath by cooperating with them.
Cavalry was less of a major component in Alexander’s army but it certainly had a role to play.
Once again we despair of some of the Strelets horse poses, and a more balanced representation of Alexander’s army would be achieved by combining this set with that of Zvezda, but this set has some charm and will doubtless find a home in future models of the exploits of one of Russia’s greatest heroes.
