 Americal Division
Shortly after their arrival, the Army decided to form them into a new division which, for reasons not altogether clear to history, was not given a number but simply known as the Americal Division—the name being a contraction of "America" and "New Caledonia".
Under the command of Major General Alexander Patch[?], the Americal Division was the first US Army unit to be sent to Guadalcanal, where it relieved the exhausted US 1st Marine Division[?], and carried the brunt of the fighting on the island from that time on.
Largely because of transport constraints, the Americal arrived piecemeal, and was fed into combat alongside the battle-hardened marines, and thus, in contrast to several other US Army divisions in the Pacific War, was able to learn the practical art of war against the Japanese without suffering as many casualties as might otherwise have eventuated.

Harvard Gazette: Bodkin is patching up depression
Psychiatrist Alexander Bodkin demonstrates a medicated patch that relieved depression quickly and without side effects during a series of tests.
The skin patch may work much faster than the pill because the drug goes directly into the bloodstream instead of through the digestive system and liver first, according to Bodkin.
Known as a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, selegiline is thought to interfere with the action of a protein that incapacitates brain chemicals, a shortage of which apparently underlies depression.

 patch - Definitions from Dictionary.com
Distinguished from a diff or mod by the fact that a patch is generated by more primitive means than the rest of the program; the classical examples are instructions modified by using the front panel switches, and changes made directly to the binary executable of a program originally written in an HLL.
The patch was distributed at about the right time for an IBM patch, had official stationery and all accompanying documentation, and was dutifully installed.
When the files being patched are not identical to those on which the diffs were based, patch uses heuristics to determine how to proceed.

Greenwood Publishing Group : Sandy Patch
This achievement earned Patch the coveted assignment of leading the assault on the beaches of southern France in 1944, which was to prepare the way for D-Day and the landing at Normandy.
The most important battles of his career, however, came in the winter of 1944-1945, when Patch's Seventh Army was able to foresee and crush the last desperate German counterattack mounted in France and join Patton's troops in the closing months of the war.
Patch, who was often overshadowed by Patton's colorful and very public persona, deliberately maintained a low profile throughout the war, earning respect through his decisiveness, acute strategic judgment, and deep concern for the safety of his men.
