Alexander Polyhistor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lucius Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor was a Greek scholar who was enslaved by the Romans during the war of Sulla and taken to Rome as a tutor.
One of Alexander’s students was Gaius Julius Hyginus, Latin author, scholar and friend of Ovid, who was appointed by Augustus to be superintendent of the Palatine library.
Alexander Cornelius, Greek grammarian, surnamed Polyhistor from his great learning, born at Miletus or Myndus in Caria, flourished about 70 B.C. He was taken prisoner in the Mithridatic war by Sulla, from whom (or from Cornelius Lentulus) he received his freedom and assumed the name Cornelius.

As one empire succeeded another, the Greek Alexander Polyhistor was in a situation in relation to the Romans similar to that of the Babylonian Berossos in relation to the Greeks.
The writings of Alexander are now lost too, but the section in which he reported Berossos' account of the Deluge and the Ark was quoted again when there was a further convulsion in the cultural development of the ancient world.

Alexander Polyhistor [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Lucius Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor was a Greek scholar, imprisoned by the Romans in the war of Sulla against Mithridates of Pontus and brought as a slave to Rome for employment as a tutor.
At last, we could consider the fragment of Polyhistor (quoted above) as a quite successful attempt to reconcile Pythagorean concepts of the unity, their doctrine of numbers as the beginning of all things, and simultaneously to include matter in the Pythagorean explanation of the origin of the sensibly acceptable world.
Generally speaking, from what we know of Polyhistor's ideas, we could gather that this "unknown philosopher" was an outstanding historian of philosophy, and an important thinker of his era, somewhat along the lines of Posidonius.

 Aristeas the Exegete
According indeed to the extract of Alexander Polyhistor, Aristeas is said to have related that Esau himself 'married Bassara and begot Job of her' (τον Ησαυ γημαντα Βασσαραν εν Εδωμ γεννησαι Ιωβ).
Most probably however this rests upon an inaccurate reference of Alexander Polyhistor; for Aristeas, who was quoting from the Bible, must certainly have called Johab not the son, but correctly the great-grandson of Esau.
James Charlesworth writes: "Aristeas the Exegete is known only through a quotation of about sixteen lines from Alexander Polyhistor that is preserved in Eusebius' Praeparatio Evangelica (9.25), which was translated into English by E. Gifford (Eusebius.

He was born during or before Alexander the Great's reign over Babylon (330-323 B.C.E.), with the earliest date suggested as 340 B.C.E. It is suggested that his native Akkadian name was Bel-re-ušu, which means, "Bel is my shepherd." "Berossos" is one of several Greek transliterations of his name.
Josephus' records of Berossos include some of the only extant narrative material, but he is likely dependent on Alexander Polyhistor, even if he did give the impression that he had direct access to Berossos.
The most direct source of material on Berossos is Josephus, received from Alexander Polyhistor.
