Alexander Roberts Dunn (September 15, 1833 – January 25, 1868) was the first Canadian to win the Victoria Cross.
Dunn was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854 when he was 21 years of age and serving in the British Army's 11th Hussars.
Dunn later rose to the rank of colonel but was killed in a hunting accident in Abyssinia in 1868.

Dunn, Alexander Roberts, army officer (b at York, Upper Canada 15 Sept 1833; d near Senufe, Abyssinia 25 Jan 1868).
Dunn was the first Canadian recipient of the VICTORIA CROSS, won as a lieutenant in the 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Regiment of Hussars at the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854.
He helped to organize the 100th (Prince of Wales' Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot, a British unit raised in Canada, and later became its commanding officer in Gibraltar.

Lynne was born Theda Mae Roberts in El Paso, Texas, November 22, 1922, the younger of two children born to Hobart K. Roberts, a native of Texas, and his wife, May Dell Holland, who hailed from Kentucky.
Roberts did secure a suitable position in Los Angeles, and it is said the family left El Paso for Los Angeles when Theda was only nine days old.

The Victoria Cross was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria, but was made retroactive to the autumn of 1854 to cover the period of the Crimean War.
In fact one of the fist Victoria Crosses Awarded was to a Canadian, Lieutenant Alexander Roberts Dunn, who won his Victoria Cross during the charge of the Light Brigade on 25 October 1854 at Balaclava.
It takes precedence over every other honor in the British empire including such illustrious orders of knighthood and chivalry such as the Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle, Order of St. Patrick, etc.

Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the remarkable feat of scoring 25 'kills' within just 12 days as leader of the so-called 'Flying Foxes', he was earlier awarded the Victoria Cross for a single-handed offensive against the German aerodrome at Arras on 2 June 1917.
Bishop was the ninth Canadian to receive the VC (the first being Alexander Roberts Dunn in 1854).
Some years after the war (from 1982 onwards) questions were raised concerning the verifiability of Bishop's feats that day and a Senate enquiry was held (he was cleared of any wrongdoing).

The rest of the 11th were passing on, unaware of the death-struggle about to take place in the rear.
They were the last of the Light Brigade, left in the heart of the enemy's ground; Lt Dunn was a wealthy man, about to retire from the service and the Victoria Cross had not then been instituted: he had nothing to gain.
In the end he killed them both, and afterwards slew a Russian Hussar who was attacking Private Levitt of the 11th, Lt Dunn lost his horse and escaped on foot to the British lines through the heart-rending debris of the Light Brigade.
