It is said that the Alexander Gordon of that eventful day, though still a youth, was compelled to sign the sentence that doomed that great young man to the stake; but the convincing Scriptural arguments and the steadfast faith of Hamilton shook him greatly, and he set himself earnestly to know the truth.
Alexander Cordon, the father of William, took his place nobly in the Earlston line of valorous grace.
Says Rutherford in his first one to the youth, 'The devil can cause Christ's glooms [frowns] to speak a lie to a weak man.' Sometimes, no doubt, in the stem years of Earlston he wrestled over that.

One of the more pleasant architectural features of the University of Alberta campus is Rutherford House, former residence of the province's first premier and the founder and long-time chancellor of the university.
Restricted by his primary purpose, he also faced a lack of sources; the Rutherford Papers are surprisingly sparse and the author was forced to rely heavily on newspapers and interviews with Rutherford's daughter.
Historians seeking a more interpretative approach to Rutherford and his administration are advised to read Babcock's 1981 article (Prairie Forum,6, 2) in which he argues that Rutherford's political experiences transformed him from a strong centralist into an alienated regionalist.
