Alexander Smyth (1765 April 17, 1830) was an American lawyer, soldier, and politician from Virginia, who served in the United States House of Representatives and as a general during the War of 1812.
Smyth was born on the Island of Rathlin, Ireland.
Smyth moved to Wythe County, Virginia, and was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1792, 1796, 1801, 1802, and from 1804 to 1808.

Alexander Smyth (1765 - 1830), was born in Ireland but emigrated to Virginia with his family when he was a young boy.
Smyth was stationed at Buffalo in September of 1812, only to find he was outranked by a militia commander, Stephen Van Rensellaer.
Smyth returned to Virginia and was eventually dropped from the army rolls.

 Alexander Smyth
SMYTH, Alexander, lawyer, born on the island of Rathlin, Ireland, in 1765; died in Washington, D. C., 26 April, 1830.
For many years he was a member of the Virginia house of representatives, and he was appointed by President Jefferson, on 8 July, 1808, colonel of a United States rifle regiment, which he commanded in the southwest until 1811, when he was ordered to Washington to prepare a system of discipline for the army.
General Smyth was the author of "Regulations for the Infantry" (Philadelphia, 1812) and "An Explanation of the Apocalypse, or Revelation of St. John" (Washington, 1825).

Company H, (Captain G. Keesling's Company) was organized May 15, 1862 at Camp Jackson, mainly from Wythe County, Virginia residents, with a few men from Smyth County thrown in for good measure.
Muster rolls for this company are consistent with others in the regiment, but reveal no special details of the company's or regiment's activities.

The emotion that this piece emits is very different compared to sculptures by Alexander Calder or Ned Smyth’s The Upper Room which therefore produce a different kind of interaction of the audience and the piece.
In comparing the Police Memorial to the works done by Alexander Calder, a sculptor of mid-twentieth century, I find that his works were more playful and pleasing to the eye.
The step down represents the fall of the police officers, and the Memorial is enclosed to serve as privacy from the outside world.
