Duke of Albany is a peerage title that has occasionally been bestowed on the younger sons in the Scottish, and later the British, royal family, particularly in the Houses of Stuart and Hanover.
The Dukedom of Albany was first granted in 1398 by King Robert III of Scotland on his brother, Robert Stewart, the title being in the Peerage of Scotland.
"Albany" was a broad territorial term representing the parts of Scotland north of the River Forth, roughly the former Kingdom of the Picts.

Murdoch Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany (1362 – 24 May 1425) was a Scottish nobleman who inherited the Dukedom of Albany in 1420, but was convicted and executed for treason five years later.
His father, Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany was a prominent Scottish nobleman who was regent in various capacities during the reigns of three kings (Robert II, Robert III, and James I).
In 1425 the king carried out a purge of the Albany Stewarts, and he was executed along with several members of his family and close associates; all of his peerage titles became attainted and were forfeited.

Albany escaped to France and thence went to England, where he concluded (1481) a treaty with Edward IV, by which the English king agreed to recognize Albany as king of Scotland if the latter became his vassal.
An English army invaded Scotland (1482), but Albany was persuaded by some of the Scottish nobles to renounce his pretensions to the throne in return for the restoration of his estates.
He was briefly reconciled with James, but in 1483 he was sentenced to death and fled to England.
