Herschel began his scientific career in 1861 when he went to the Royal School of Mines (he stayed for four years) and began what was to be his life’s work; the study of meteors.
Herschel’s first major achievement was the observation of a meteor spectrum using a binocular direct vision spectroscope which was fitted with prisms of his own design.
At the retirement of Alexander Herschel in 1886 the Physical Laboratory was named after him and to this day the present Physics Department is housed in the Herschel Building.

 John Herschel
In fact Herschel had become an astronomer from a sense of duty, and it was by filial loyalty to his father's memory that he was now impelled to undertake the completion of the work nobly begun at Slough.
John Herschel possessed this endowment to a large extent; and he solaced his declining years with the translation of the Iliad into verse, having earlier executed a similar version of Schiller's Walk.
Sir John Herschel met with an amount of public recognition which was unusual in the time of his illustrious father.

The letter shown here lists Herschel's view of who were the leading colleagues of his day, the "Literary and Scientific persons distinguished for their labours in promoting Meteoric Astronomy in America and the Continent" who received copies of Herschel's paper on "the Detonating Meteor." A two-page letter, 4to, dated Hawkhurst, 22 December 1864.
These achievements show that Alexander Herschel was unique in his family — and therefore appealing, at least to my mind — for he served as much or more as a catalyst in his field than someone who toiled in search of the Grand Discovery.
Sir John Frederick Herschel, Alexander's father, pioneered celestial photography, discovered 525 nebulae, and is especially remembered for his studies and cataloguing of the southern skies.

A similar statement was made in 1840, when he commented that the "precise date of the greatest meteoric frequency in October is still less definitely known, but it will in all probability be found to occur between the 8th and 25th of the month."
The first precise observation of this shower were made by Alexander Stewart Herschel on October 18, 1864.
Herschel next observed the shower on October 20, 1865, with a radiant of RA=90 deg, DEC=+15 deg being revealed from 19 meteors.

Observations of the Eta Aquarids were rare, but, during 1876, Professor Alexander Stewart Herschel discovered something which at least began to generate a greater interest in the shower.
Herschel immediately noted that Tupman's observed radiants of 1870 and 1871 were very near these predictions.
During this same year, Herschel examined all available observations and noted that the shower's radiant seemed to move further eastward as each day passed.

The following year, Professor Alexander Stewart Herschel of England was met with the unusually high rate of 60 meteors per hour at a time when the radiant was at an average height of only 19 degrees!
Although Herschel's high hourly rate did not become an annual event, it did help to stimulate interest in the shower in the years that followed.
Observations of this meteor shower since 1864 have revealed the earliest activity to be present on December 28, while the stream last appears on January 7.
