  Life of Alexander Whyte, The
Whyte's health was better than for long, and one day in July 1918 he could chronicle a walk with Dr. Sutherland Black of a quite old-time length: “He and I walked three hours and a half, over Corstorphine Hill and round by Cramond.
Whyte's second daughter, Janet, had married Clinton Chance of Birmingham, so they had with them for a time both a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law; and two of their younger children, Rhoda and Robert, who a just completed their courses at Somerville and Balliol, brought Oxford friends whose presence added fresh interests.
Whyte attended a public meeting, presided over by Dr. Kelman, at which the venerable teacher pleaded for a universal language as one means of securing peace.

Whyte's Report to Commissioner Johnston we learn that Milanji is an isolated range of, for the greater part, precipitous mountains, the main mass forming a huge natural fortress of weather-worn precipices, or very steep rocky ascents, sparsely clothed with vegetation.
Whyte ascended the mountain on 20th October led up its south-east face, and at first zig-zagged over steep grassy hills, down precipitous gorges, and across rocky streams with beds of large water-borne granite boulders, which, when flooded, became impassable mountain-torrents.

In his Young Men’s Classes, Scottish Pastor Alexander Whyte spent a year teaching on "The Mystics." Each week Dr. Whyte spent time discussing the spiritual vitality and commitment of Tauler, Thomas a Kempis, Luther, Santa Teresa, St. John of the Cross, Madame Guyon and Fenelon.
As an evangelical Protestant, I was intrigued that a Protestant minister, as eminent as Dr. Whyte, would spend time focusing on the mystics, a group that I knew little about.
Alexander Whyte, and perhaps a host of others, who value what can be learned from the mystics, would no doubt consider such a class a worthwhile endeavor.

 Introduction - Prayer
Prayer is so fundamental to the Christian faith and life, a subject of such comprehensive instruction and illustration in the Bible, and a matter of such interest, complexity, and personal importance that the study of it could easily fill up a year or two of Sabbath evenings.
Alexander Whyte preached a series of sermons on prayer in which Luke 11:1, "Lord, teach us to pray," was combined with some other text to exhibit some aspect of the life of prayer.
Some of these were later published in the book Lord, Teach us to Pray, which is not only quintessential Alexander Whyte, but the finest work on prayer I have ever read.
