Doniphan began (1830) to practice law in Lexington, Mo., and served three terms in the state legislature, becoming involved in the Mormon issue.
Although Doniphan was a slaveholding unionist, he sought a middle ground to stave off war in the 1850s and early 1860s and served as a delegate to the Washington Peace Conference in 1861.

Alexander William Doniphan (July 9, 1808–August 8, 1887) was an American lawyer and soldier, born in Mason County, Kentucky.
At the beginning of the Mexican-American War in 1846, Doniphan entered the United States Army as colonel of the 1st Regiment of Missouri mounted volunteers, and served with honor in several campaigns, including the march of Stephen W. Kearny on Santa Fe and an expedition into Mexico.
Doniphan married Elizabeth Jane Thornton in 1838 and had two sons, neither of whom lived past age 18.

In 1838, Doniphan, as brigadier general of the state militia, was ordered against the Mormons by the governor but flatly refused to carry out orders to execute Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders.

Doniphan, who returned to law practice at Richmond, Mo., opposed secession and favored neutrality for Missouri in 1861.

Alexander Doniphan attended the Lexington Convention as the Whig candidate for the United States Senate vying with David Atchison, one of his Democratic opponents.
Doniphan encountered no resistance and had a "friendly chat with Joseph Smith and the leading men, and appeared to be very friendly to the `mormons'." Caldwell County officials released their non-Mormon prisoners to Doniphan and surrendered their weapons.
Doniphan reinforced General John Wool in the State of Chihauhua for the defense of Texas and to support the United States' claim to the Rio Grande as the border.

Alexander was graduated at Augusta College, Kentucky, in 1826, and on being admitted to the bar in 1830 began the practice of law at Lexington, Mo. Three years afterward he removed still farther west, to the village of Liberty, in Clay County.
At the head of a considerable force of state troops, Doniphan imposed terms upon the prophet Joseph Smith ; the Mormons were obliged to give up their leaders for trial, lay down their arms, and leave the state of Missouri.

Colonel Alexander William Doniphan was ordered by General Kearney to take troops from Santa Fe to Chihuahua, Mexico, to support General Wool.
On his way, at the Bracito River, Doniphan was faced with a superior Mexican force that demanded surrender, saying that if he did not they would charge and give no quarter.
Doniphan replied with his famous "Charge and be damned." In the subsequent battle, the Mexicans were routed in short order, and Doniphan proceeded on his way.

Doniphan engaged and defeated Mexican troops at El Brazito, about 25 miles up the Rio Grand from The Pass, and he engaged and defeated another Mexico force near the Sacramento River trail crossing, 20 miles north of the city of Chihuahua.
In late 1846, when Colonel Doniphan marched down the trail to do battle with the enemy at El Brazito and the Sacramento River during the war with Mexico, he crossed the Jornada del Muerto with nearly 1000 troops, according to Robert Selph Henry in The Story of the Mexican War.
Santa Fe – "The town is very irregularly laid out, and most of the streets are little better than common highways… The only attempt at anything like architectural compactness and precision consists in four tiers of buildings whose fronts are shaded with a fringe of portales [entrances] or corredores [corridors] of the rudest possible description.
