WITT: Well, I did play a few of them and, I mean, it's kind of a frustrating thing, because they are very hard.
WITT: Yeah, because we incorporated a few things from the game, which is some of the characters… Jill Valentine, and of course the Nemesis, Carlos and Nicoli, they're all characters from the game.
WITT: Well, you can, because at the beginning, we tell a little story about what happened in the first one, and there are also some flashbacks that we have.

 2001 New Orleans Masters Coverage
Witt gets a pretty fast start going first with a second turn Wild Mongrel, and Kyle's Peek shows that Alex has a decent hand as well, with Repel, Muscle Burst, and Deep Reconnaissance, but no other creatures.
Nevertheless Witt plays Seton's Desire on his Avenger, and attacks with both the Mongrel and Avenger, using his Muscle Burst to take out Kyle's Angelic Wall that had blocked the Mongrel.
Witt didn't have anything that could stop this, so he just attacked with the Mongrel.

I cannot fairly speculate as to why Witt hasn't been the primary director of a film yet, but I also can't imagine why anyone would ever pass up directing anything that wasn't this - which must mean that this was most likely his first opportunity.
Of course, while Anderson may fail to realize that he's not supposed to be writing a live action video game (we have the Sega CD to thank for that failed experiment), we do have Alexander "Second Unit" Witt to keep us in check.
Truth is, I've spent most of this review using their names interchangeably, and that's because in spite of only maintaining a writing credit, this feels like Anderson directed it.

 Review: Resident Evil
Witt has the entire Raccoon City to play with, but elects to keep his action tightly photographed (extremely annoying) and limited in imagination.
There are some ideas of Anderson's that Witt does manage to sell correctly, including Alice's new superhero powers, which culminates in a bravo sequence where she literally runs down the front of a skyscraper to tag some baddies on the ground floor.
Jovovich accomplishes what she can in "Apocalypse," but whatever entertaining tough guy skills the character has for this continuation, Witt obliterates with rapid-fire editing and a disturbing adoration for deafening "boo!" scares, which slowly consume this entire production like a cancer.

slant // magazine.com: DVD Review - Resident Evil: Apocalypse
After quickly synopsizing the original's events, Witt's rambunctious sequel kicks into high gear as Alice, seemingly imbued with superhuman powers by Umbrella's experiments, takes to the chaotic, zombie-filled streets of Raccoon City in an effort to thwart the undead menace.
The city is under an Umbrella-mandated quarantine that's trapped uninfected citizens with the rabid, swarming creatures, and though this setting exhibits none of its predecessor's claustrophobic, cold-steel creepiness, Witt drenches his depravity in jet-fl griminess that's reminiscent of the games' eerily decaying environments.
When it comes to zombie-killing pandemonium, Anderson and Witt wisely recognize that two sizzling hot, partially dressed badasses are invariably better than one.

Movieman's Guide to the Movies - Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) - Special Edition
This track was pretty basic but what I was relieved that the commentators didn't telestrate the entire thing as some do if they have nothing to say.
Instead, Witt (who makes his directorial debut) talks about how he came aboard, why they chose him (he's an accomplished second unit director of films like Speed, The Bourne Identity and The Italian Job to name only a few).
The three are pretty formal and talk about angles, how this or that scene was shot, the great job Witt did and (my favorite) wanting to make a film that will still be remembered 10 to 15 years from now (yeah, right).

Witt does keep a fast pace on this one, though: that nasty T-Virus has broken out of containment and into Raccoon City, and faster than you can say "close the blast doors!" the dastardly Umbrella Corporation has locked the place down---with the majority of the city's citizens inside.
Pacing isn't a problem, and Alexander Witt gets right to work, picking up where the last film left off and keeping up a helter-skelter pace throughout.
I want to see the fight sequences, not just have Witt jerking the camera back and forth in front of some guy who might as well be wearing a K-Mart special Halloween mask every time we get a combat scene.

The sequel picks up where the first one left off, though this time it's Alexander Witt behind the camera instead of the genre's heavily hated Paul W.S. Anderson (who returned to his script duties here).
The result is a hodge-podge of style gone wrong, with blurry effects made to "heighten" the zombie horror that only make the viewer disoriented and confused.

Unfortunately, we also learned that Paul W. Anderson’s screenplays are to be looked upon with suspicion, and that the transition from director of photography (second unit) to film director (which Alexander Witt tried to do here) often doesn’t translate at all!

First-time director Alexander Witt, who worked with the original Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson as an assistant director, gets the hang of things pretty quickly, inundating audiences with eye-popping thrills and Matrix-esque action sequences.
Witt also brings back some favorites from the original, including the undead Dobermans, who look like they've been turned inside out; and the Lickers, those lovely biochemical experiments, with long-whipping tongues they use to snatch their prey.
