Alexander Zaitsev (born June 16, 1952) is a former world ice skating and olympic champion for the USSR team, a skating coach and administrator from Russia (former Soviet Union).
Zaitsev is best remembered for his successful partnership with Irina Rodnina as World and Olympic Pairs Skating champions of the 1970s.
After retiring from competition, he became a coach and for a time was involved in the administration of the sport.

Irina Konstantinovna Rodnina (born September 12, 1949, Moscow, Russia) was a Soviet figure skater.
She won ten World Championships and three consecutive Olympic gold medals in pairs competition between 1971 and 1980 with her partners Alexei Ulanov and Alexander Zaitsev (whom she later married).

In the technical program, the skaters must execute eight required elements (jumps, spins, and footwork sequences); there are mandatory deductions for failures, and skaters are not permitted to retry missed elements or insert extra elements.
Because the number of skaters participating in these competitions has become very large in recent years (making it hard to judge these events), there is now a qualifying round competition at the world championships to seed the skaters and reduce the number who make it to the final round.
The rules specifically allow for situations where skaters have problems with their equipment or costumes breaking that makes it difficult or dangerous for them to continue skating, as well as similar problems with their music or the ice surface.

But I honestly feel that some of the medals awarded to Russian skaters have been due to the judging.
Ulanov was a great skater, and he thought that Rodnina won't be able to be back, but she took another partner, Alexander Zaitsev, who, without her would be a mediocre skater at best and she helped him to match her level.
She is legendary, incomparable, the best pair skater ever easily.
