Schlippenbach formed the Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966 to perform the piece "Globe Unity," which had been commissioned by the Berliner Jazztage.
Schlippenbach began heading various bands after 1967, among them a 1970 trio with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens (both were also in his quartet along with bassist Peter Kowald), and a duo with drummer/vocalist Sven-ake Johansson which they co-formed in 1976.
Alexander Von Schlippenbach has most frequently recorded for FMP, although Japo, Saba, and Po Torch have also released some of his work.

 Alexander von Schlippenbach, Broomriding
Alex von Schlippenbach is one of the truest of Thelonious Monk’s disciples.
Even in anarchic surroundings, Schlippenbach plays delicately, unobtrusively, as if dabbing at the keys instead of striking them; refraining from playing chords too often, he runs notes through his hands like a string of beads.
Though they are basically free improvisations, they are orderly in their exposition of their core musical ideas; since they are credited to Schlippenbach rather than the entire quartet, perhaps there’s more “composition” to them than first meets the eye.

Alexander von Schlippenbach: Compression & Monk's Casino
In the January 2004 issue of this gazette, two CDs by Schlippenbach were reviewed; The first was a ecstatic new entry into the catalogue of the Globe Unity Orchestra (which he founded in 1966) and the other was a quartet outing.
Schlippenbach has commented on how much he prefers to keep playing with certain players, the years together actually forcing them away from inevitable cliches.
In 1992, Schlippenbach and some of his avant garde friends recorded several sets of standards, operating incognito in an attempt to prove they were as capable as anyone at playing straight.

Alexander von Schlippenbach : Schlippenbach Plays Monk - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Schlippenbach has played with both sidemen previously (Nobuyoshi can be heard with the Schlippenbach/Takase-led Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and Murray on the excellent FMP album Smoke) but this tour was the first that brought them all together and the pairing brings an interesting dynamic to the often revisited Thelonious Monk songbook.
And on their collective tight-wire of precision and fire rides is Schlippenbach in a loving set that is probably the closest thing to a straight tribute to Monk that he has been recorded.
Monk in fact, is a constant point of departure and return for Schlippenbach and fully immersed in Thelonious as he is here, he is rapturous; may he have many returns.

In the third week of April, 1969, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach took a seven-piece ensemble comprised of German, Dutch and British musicians into Conny Plank’s Rhenus Studio in Godorf, near Köln.
Schlippenbach initially issued the album on his own Quasar label.
Schlippenbach’s The Living Music remains one of the most glorious, if also one of the least well known, of the label’s adopted children.

Of von Straelborn's statement we only have a fragment, but not even he was interested in justifying his quartermaster.
Von Straelborn stayed in Stockholm and was never to take command of the batallion, which counted 500 men, few officers and defective equipment.

The History of Jazz Music. Alexander Von Schlippenbach: biography, discography, review, links
Educated at avantgarde classical music, German pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach (1938) entered the fray of free-jazz via Gunther Hampel's and Manfred Schoof's quintets.
The fundamental difference between this European kind of free-jazz and Ornette Coleman's (or John Coltrane's) free-jazz was the rhythm: the European rhythm was cold, abstract, a purely sonic element, whereas the USA rhythm was warm, bodily and, ultimately, jazz.
Schlippenbach mainly conducted the music on Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (may 1989), that contained Kenny Wheeler's 22-minute Ana and Misha Mengelberg's 19-minute Reef Und Kneebus, The Morlocks (july 1993), with the 16-minute The Morlocks, and Live In Japan (july 1996).

Alexander von Schlippenbach : Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra
Perhaps in part due to recording for a label, ECM, known for its soft edges, this album, the first by Alexander von Schlippenbach's large ensemble, is a good deal less raucous than one might otherwise expect.
All three compositions (and there is a high percentage of written music here) -- one by Kenny Wheeler and two by Misha Mengelberg -- are only a step or three away from fairly mainstream big band jazz.

It's not just high-volume, high-intensity blowing, though, there are loads of creative twists, including Parker vocalizing through his mouthpiece and what sounds like Schlippenbach playing the inside of his piano.

Bagatellen: Alexander Von Schlippenbach - Broomriding
In Psi's short history, the wild card is certainly this Schlippenbach record, not just for the presence of its leader, but because it stands so well apart from Psi's other "new" releases in its very uniqueness and perhaps moreso for what it says about Schlippenbach in 2003.
Rejuvenated is perhaps the wrong word, but the "Broomriding" numbers reflect a newness in the pianist's attack and management of notes that leave wonder as to what he has been doing outside of the 90's trio and his own Monk obsession, at least in terms of commercial releases.
Their chemistry, with the inclusion of Paul Lovens, seals Broomriding as a disc with many colors of moxie, and it is my personal hope that this outfit becomes a working unit on some level or another.

The material consists of seven Schlippenbach pieces (the numbered “Broomriding” tracks), two by Tristan Honsinger and two by Eric Dolphy.
The Schlippenbach pieces form the backbone of the album, providing a series of concentrated free improvisations that will reveal their merits over years, not months; suffice to say that “Broomriding 4,” a brisk-paced piece featuring rapid-fire clarinet, is already a favourite.
Personnel: Alexander von Schlippenbach, piano; Rudi Mahall, bass clarinet; Tristan Honsinger, cello; Paul Lovens, drums.

He has recorded countless albums solo or as a group leader, and has recorded or performed with Peter Brötzmann -- including Brötzmann's epochal Machine Gun in 1968 -- John Stevens, Derek Bailey, Keith Rowe, Joe McPhee, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, and many others.
Two key associations have been pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach's trio with Parker and drummer Paul Lovens (including the classic early recording Pakistani Pomade and the more recent Elf Bagatellen) and a trio with bassist Barry Guy and drummer Paul Lytton.
On Parker's 50th birthday, these two bands played a set apiece at a London concert; the results were issued by Leo Records as 50th Birthday Concert, a recording that is one of the highlights of Parker's (massive) oeuvre and remains a useful introduction to his music.
