The park Alexandra Park was officially opened on June 26 1882 by the Prince and Princess of Wales (Princess Alexandra).
The park is well known for its diverse and abundant wildlife, especially at the Northern end, known as 'Old Roar Gill' which is now a Local Nature Reserve.
Alexandra Park is probably the best public park in Britain in which to see beautiful trees, both rare and common.

 Manchester Parks and Gardens
Park keepers were initially not keen on thousands of visitors tramping over their lawns, the Head Keeper at Philips describing them as "low elements", and in 1859 sixty cast iron "Keep off the Grass" signs were purchased - keepers were issued with caps, badges and whistles, and enforced the rule strictly.
Birchfields Park was purchased by the Corporation in 1887, acquired for use as a public park for the sum of £9,930 from Sir William Anson, a local landowner, whose name is commemorated in the nearby Anson Housing Estate and the arterial Anson Road that runs through the district.
A prominent fixture in the park, and somewhat of a local mystery, is the huge boulder (weighing in at 13 tons), which was uncovered during excavations by a building contractor on the local estate and was presented to the park as an object of curiosity.

Park users have always found Alexandra Park pleasant and well laid out and the highest point of the Park gives views North to Ben Lomond and South to the Tinto Hills.
The main pedestrian entrance into the Park is through the main ornamental gates leading from Alexandra Parade into an impressive formal seasonal and carpet bedding display area leading round to the small formal rose garden.
The Park is located in the Dennistoun area of Glasgow about three miles east of the City Centre and is bound by the M8 motorway to the north, Alexandra Parade/Cumbernauld Road to the south, Provan Road to the east and Sannox Gardens to the west.

The Park, which stretches over 21/2 miles, is sheltered from the prevailing southwesterly winds by mature trees, many of which are referred to elsewhere in this booklet, enabling a wide variety of hardy, semi-hardy and sub-tropical plants to be grown.
The first park constable was appointed for the purpose of controlling such activities as skipping, leap-frog, kiss-in-the-ring and persons walking on the grass edging; since then standards have changed considerably.
One of the main attractions of Alexandra Park is its wide variety; blending gracefully from the long informal lawns through the formality of the rose garden and bedded area, to the informality of the natural areas of the Ghyll, Thorpes and Coronation Woods, which attract a wide variety of birds.
