Alexandre Benois is a painter and a graphic art-easel painter, an illustrator, a designer of the book, a craftsman of theatrical scenery, a director, an author of ballet libretto.
Benois was as well as an outstanding Russian historian and West-European art one, a theorist and a great publicist, an acute critic, a prominent museum figure, an incomparable connoisseur of theatre, music and choreography.
The main character trait of Alexandre Benois is all-absorbing love to art; the versatility of his knowledge was only an expression of this love.

Benois created Giselle and Petrushka, for the Ballets Russes, the most well-known and accomplished of his works.
Presenting a selection of costumes, pastels, watercolours, gouaches and sketches for costume, sets and props for theatre and ballet performances, the volume studies the differences between Bakst's sensual and decadent orientalism and Benois' academic classicism, within the context of the different cultural interests and backgrounds of the two artists.

Despite the Imperial Court's initial disinterest, the work swiftly won its public -- among whom was a group of young enthusiasts, the "Neva Pickwickians," whose number included Alexandre Benois, Leon Bakst, and Sergei Diaghilev.
Benois noted that their imaginations were fired by the glories of the work, and thirty years later it was Diaghilev's Ballets Russes that brought THE SLEEPING BEAUTY to the West.
In 1921 his company was without a choreographer, and he decided to show his European audiences something of the splendor of the Imperial Ballet.

The most influential figure of the early twentieth century was the impresario Sergey Diaghilev, who founded an innovative touring ballet company in 1909 with choreographer Michel Fokine, dancer Vaslav Nijinksy, and designer Alexandre Benois.
In 1898 the theatrical designer Alexandre Benois and the dance impresario Sergey Diaghilev founded the World of Art group, which extended the innovation of the previous generation, played a central role in introducing the contemporary modern ar t of Western Europe to Russia, and acquainted West Europeans with Russia's art through exhibitions and publications.
In the nineteenth century, Russia's architecture and decorative arts combined European techniques and influences with the forms of early Russia, producing the so-called Russian Revival seen in churches, public buildings, and homes of that period.

Petrushka (based loosely on the Alexandre Benois libretto)
It was a pity that Nikolai Kabaniaev’s interpretation of Petrushka had to be the final ballet to give Erika Johnson such a central role in a convoluted plot about Angels, Children, Choice, Behavior and a Master Charlatan.
Clearly the company lacks the resources to rival Fokine and a collaboration with Benois and Stravinsky which produced the most perfect theater ballet yet choreographed.

Report on the 22nd Pordenone Silent Film Festival
The first great work to screen as part of the retrospective was Yakov Protazanov's 1916 The Queen of Spades (Pikovaya Dama).
Protazanov's film distinguishes itself on many levels (sets by Alexandre Benois, creative camerawork), but especially its keen study of the psyche.
Mozhukhin's performance in this film is one of studied, self-absorbed intensity, perfectly assimilating the contemporaneous Russian acting ideal for interior characterisation.
