Alexander Grothendieck (born March 28, 1928 in Berlin, Germany) is one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century.
The Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem was announced by Grothendieck at the initial Arbeitstagung in Bonn, in 1957.
Perhaps Grothendieck's deepest single accomplishment is the invention of the étale and l-adic cohomology theories, which explain an observation of André Weil's, that there is a deep connection between the topological characteristics of a variety and its diophantine (number theoretic) properties.

This was first done in algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory by Alexandre Grothendieck to define the étale cohomology of a scheme.
Grothendieck topologies are not comparable to the classical notion of a topology on a space.
Grothendieck saw that it would be possible to use Serre's idea to define a cohomology theory which he suspected would be the Weil cohomology.

The first two are satisfied by definition in an Abelian category, and others may or may not be.

In a famous 1954 speech, Hermann Weyl said of Jean-Pierre Serre, "never before have I witnessed such a brilliant ascension of a star in the mathematical sky as yours." Surely Weyl would have been equally impressed that Serre's star is still burning bright some 50 years later.
Had Weyl lived but a bit longer he would have seen the comet that was Alexandre Grothendieck.
It was visibly coming to those who looked in the right place in 1954, arguably brighter than all the other celestial objects in the period 1958-1970, and then occasionally visible (but only by telescope) since.

The various volumes of the ``Seminaire de Geometrie Algebrique'' of Alexandre Grothendieck, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Mathematics more than 20 years ago are sold out and no longer available.
It seems to be impossible to reach the main author, Grothendieck himself, but I (Bas Edixhoven; I do take responsibility for this statement) do not expect him to be against this project.
For this volume, the only author other than Grothendieck is Michèle Raynaud, and she has given her permission for the project.

Although his productive research ended in 1975, many mathematicians maintain that Alexandre Grothendieck is the greatest living mathematician.
The author organized a committee to search for him that led to his discovery, in good health and busily at work, in September, 1996.

It is my responsibility as a conscientious reporter, to let you know that I have studied the old, classical Algebraic Geometry, (notably the texts of Hodge and Pedoe), and various branches of classical Number Theory, such as Analytic Number Theory, Additive Number Theory, the Geometry of Numbers, Diophantine Approximation, and all that.
In all fairness to Thom, it is known that Alexandre Grothendieck didn't treat him very well when they were both at the Institute des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (the French Institute for Advanced Study), in the 70's.
To Grothendieck, Thom and anyone else associated with the Institute was, prima facie, a capitalistic tool, stoodge, running dog, and unregenerable militarist.

I now foresee (after successive extensions of the initial project) that the manuscript of the whole of the two volumes, which I hope to finish definitively in the course of this year, will be about 1500 typed pages in length.

One reason why I'm interested in this letter is that Grothendieck seems to have understood the importance of "higher algebraic structures" before most people.
The idea is that all the cutting-and-pasting constructions in n-dimensional topology can be described algebraically in the cobordism n-category.
In any event, these marvelous algebraic structures have been cropping up more and more in physics (see especially Crane's stuff listed in "week2" and Freed's paper listed in "week12"), so I got ahold of a copy of Grothendieck's letter and have begun trying to understand it.
